Friedel Ammann

Friedel Ammann (* 1959 in Basel ) is a Swiss photographer .

biography

After finishing school and his apprenticeship, he began extreme climbing and alpinism in 1977 . In 1981 he started his first trips by bike across Europe, later worldwide to Tunisia , Algeria , Malawi , Senegal , South Africa , Indonesia , the Philippines , Afghanistan , the camera always with him. Friedel Ammann learned the photographic trade with the help of photographer friends, specialist literature and intensive work in the darkroom. He particularly studied the work of Ansel Adams , Henri Cartier-Bresson , Josef Koudelka and Werner Bischof . Friedel Ammann still has no formally certified qualifications as a photographer.

In 1985 he co-founded the travel outfitter Transa Backpacking Basel, where he got to know the work and biography of Richard Buckminster Fuller and Bill Moss (Moss - Museum of Modern Art , New York : “For me, a tent is a modern art object that you can walk into As a tribute, Friedel Ammann exhibited their geodetic and anthropometric tents in 1989 at the Kunstmuseum Basel among works of art by Rodin and Hans Arp .

The first photojournalism work and publications in various media in Switzerland followed in 2000 . In 2001 he started his aid project in Manila: "The roses from Metro Manila ". After the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001 , Friedel Ammann received a request from National Geographic to document the Afghanistan Institute in Bubendorf near Basel .

In 2002 he traveled to Dakar , Senegal for his aid project “Thiaba” . This was followed by publications in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung - folio, Tages-Anzeiger , Le Temps ( art Basel ), Die Zeit , Nikonprofessionell , Geo , Der Spiegel , as well as commissioned work for Hoffmann-La Roche , Basilea Pharmaceutica , Vitra , Sony , Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft , Joachim Rittmeyer u. a. m. In 2005 and 2007 he traveled to Afghanistan on behalf of UNESCO and took photos there for an aid organization . In 2008 he went on a reportage trip to Oman and in 2009 a bike trip took him through southern Italy and in 2010 France. He carried out commissioned work for the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen. In March 2011 he went on a bike trip through Japan, u. a. to Fukushima . In 2012 he carried out a travel report in Indonesia and in 2013 a bicycle tour with a report on Palestine. In 2014 he traveled through southern Europe, Portugal, Spain, Greece and southern Italy. In 2015 he made a travel report in Madagascar and in 2017 a trip through Eastern Europe. 2018 travel report through Sicily on the subject of migration. 2019 travel report through Northern Ireland, Ireland on the subject of Brexit.
