Life

De Leuw was born as the eldest son of the ophthalmologist Friedrich Hermann de Leuw in Gräfrath. After attending the Catholic high school in Cologne , he trained as a landscape painter at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1838 - with an interruption due to military service in 1839/1840 . His first sketchbook dates back to 1837. From 1840 to 1843 he attended Johann Wilhelm Schirmer's landscape class at the Düsseldorf Academy . On the advice of his teacher, he hiked with fellow students through the Neandertal and the Eifel , later on the Rhine , Moselle and Nahe . De Leuw toured the Netherlands in the 1840s . In 1851 he was represented with a work in the Düsseldorf Gallery in New York City . In 1861 he traveled to Hackney near London .

On May 25, 1861, he married Maria Frances Charrington there, with whom he settled in London in 1861/1862 and later lived at the Grünewald house in Graefrath. She gave birth to the children Adeline Maria Elisabeth (* 1862) , Friedrich Herrmann (* 1864), Franziska Maria (* 1865) and Alfred Reginald (* 1867). The Grünewald house, the extension of which served as his studio , was generously redesigned and expanded by de Leuw until 1866. De Leuw spent the last twenty years of his life mainly in Manderscheid and Düsseldorf. He was buried in Graefrath.
