Friedrich Hüttemann (* 9. May 1875 in Büderich , † the 30th December 1945 in Werl ) was a German Roman Catholic priest , philologist and writer of hymns . He was one of the main authors of the Sursum Corda and director of the Marien-Gymnasium Werl .

Life

Friedrich Hüttemann attended the Rector's School in Werl and graduated from the Theodorianum in Paderborn with distinction in 1895 . He then studied Catholic theology in Paderborn and Tübingen . In Tübingen he became a member of the Catholic student association AV Guestfalia . On 20 March 1899 he was in the Great Cathedral in Paderborn by Bishop Hubert Theophilus Simar for ordained priest and was followed by two years as vicar in Essentho operates.

He then took up another degree, this time in German and Classical Philology in Berlin and Halle an der Saale . He completed it with the religion teacher exam and at the same time acquired the facultas docendi for Hebrew , Latin , Greek and German . On April 29, 1905, Friedrich Hüttemann took up his first position as a candidate for the teaching post in Herford . Just six months later, he moved to a regular job as a teacher to Dorsten . Because of his achievements, he was awarded the title of high school professor in 1913 .

When, after the death of Johannes Spieker in January 1914, the search was on for a new director of the Werler Gymnasium, the choice fell on July 8, 1914, in favor of senior teacher Hüttemann. He took up his new office on September 10th. During this time, the school name Marien-Gymnasium was approved and the school was recognized as a full institution. The war years were then characterized by secondary school leaving exams , strong fluctuations in teaching staff and a shortage of teaching and learning materials. From 1925, director Hüttemann and his staff implemented the requirements of the Richert grammar school reform at the Marien grammar school. He saw school as a place of education and upbringing (cf. the quotation below). As the headmaster, he was known for his strict and precise administration. Gerhard Bönnemann characterized him in the school chronicle with the following words: Hüttemann remained a simple man from the country all his life, withdrawn and bitter, averse to all postures, outward appearances meant little to him. His health was not the best. He had very sensitive airways, and in the course of time he developed a heart condition with circulatory disorders.

He was removed from office by the National Socialists on June 23, 1934 , citing the law for the restoration of the civil service . In their opinion, a Catholic clergyman was unsuitable for running a public grammar school “in the National Socialist sense”.

In retirement, Hüttemann devoted himself to pastoral care again and wrote the texts for a number of hymns. He wrote numerous scientific articles and worked 25 years on the creation of the hymn book of the Archdiocese of Paderborn Sursum Corda . More than 30 song texts written by him have been included in the hymn book, some of them are among the most sung hymns. Several songs by Hüttemann were taken over into the praise of God used in the German-speaking congregations of the Catholic Church from 1975 , primarily in the different appendices of the dioceses. The Paderborn appendix naturally contains a particularly large number of songs , but they can also be found, for example, in the Berlin appendix .

After his death in 1945, his family donated his entire valuable library to the Marien-Gymnasium, in accordance with Friedrich Hüttemann's request.

Honors

Quote

"Is it necessary to go into details, to the countless opportunities to practice punctuality, in silence, in calm sitting, in control of the eyes, in incorruptible truthfulness and honesty, in benevolent disposition towards our classmates, free from resentment and glee as from arrogance and sensitivity? These are small things, of course, but not unimportant; By the way, we wanted to get rid of all the 'little things' from our lives, most of which would be left with nothing. The conscientious person, however, knows absolutely no trifles in the things of his character formation, and every education that does not place the main emphasis on such sacrifices begins at the wrong end, that is: it does not begin at all.
