Friedrich Lossow (born June 13, 1837 in Munich , † January 19, 1872 in Schleissheim ) was a German animal painter and illustrator .

Life

Friedrich Lossow was the second of three sons of the Munich-based sculptor Arnold Hermann Lossow and his wife Friederike. He grew up in Munich with his brothers Karl and Heinrich . From 1845 to 1848 he attended the Protestant school in Glockenbachstrasse, moved to the Royal College in 1848, and in 1849 to the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich . At the annual "public mention" in free hand drawing, but also praised for his hard work and good progress, he nevertheless left the grammar school at the beginning of 1852. On October 30, 1852, his entry into the class of antiquities at the Munich Art Academy , headed by Johann Georg Hiltensperger , is documented. In 1860 he switched to the painting class of the history painter Karl Theodor Piloty for a short time . After leaving the art academy, he specialized as an animal painter, advised by Theodor Horschelt , Friedrich Voltz and Alexander von Kotzebue, among others . As a painter and draftsman, he settled in Munich all his life. He worked as an illustrator for the Munich publishing house Braun & Schneider and its Munich Bilderbogen and Fliegende Blätter ; also for book editions for the Stuttgart publishers Cohen & Risch, Nitzschke and Kröner. His oil paintings, watercolors and original drawings have been shown at exhibitions in Munich and, among others, in Cologne and Vienna. Many of them appeared in the implementation as wood engravings in the illustrated family papers of the time, such as "Daheim" , " Gartenlaube " or " Über Land und Meer ". Lossow was friends with Wilhelm Busch , who caricatured him in a dressing gown on the occasion of a joint study visit in the summer of 1858 in Brannenburg, Upper Bavaria . Lossow drew illustrations for Busch's occasional poem “The careless rent. An instructive story ”.

Friedrich Lossow died only 34 years old in Schleissheim near Munich, where his brother Heinrich was based. He was buried in the old southern cemetery in Munich.
