Christian Wilhelm Ferdinand Friedrich Freiherr von La Roche-Starkenfels (born June 17, 1769 in Monsheim , † April 14, 1838 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of Schweidnitz .

Life

His parents were Friedrich Georg Philipp von La Roche-Starkenfels (1729-1803) and his wife Karoline Elisabeth Sophie, née Spiegel zum Desenberg († 1803). His father was the lord of Monsheim and Hessen-Kasselscher Privy Council and District President. His brother Philipp von La Roche-Starkenfels (1770-1842) was a major general in Baden.

Military career

La Roche-Starkenfels went into service in Hesse on March 19, 1783 and joined a hussar regiment as a saber squire. During the First Coalition War he fought in the cannonade of Valmy and the battles near Weilburg, Guntersblum, Bingen and Weißenburg. At that time he joined the Garde du Corps as a cornet in 1793 and became second lieutenant there in 1795 . On December 31, 1796 he switched to Prussian service , where he was aggregated as a second lieutenant in the hussar regiment "von Wolffradt" . On March 29, 1800 he came to the Hussar Regiment "von Günther" as a staff assistant master with a patent from April 30, 1800 . On October 8, 1805, he became captain and squadron chief there . During the Fourth Coalition War , La Roche-Starkenfels was a brigade major in the headquarters of General L'Estocq. He fought in the battle of Prussian Eylau as well as the battles near Soldau and Königsberg. On March 4, 1807 he became a major . For the 1807 campaign, La Roche-Starkenfels received the order Pour le Mérite on July 18, 1807 . On May 5, 1808 he received the Order of St. Vladimir III. He was given five months' leave three days later to organize his affairs in Monsheim. In addition, he received a diamond ring from the Tsar on May 12, 1808 in memory of the campaign of 1807. After his return he was transferred to the Silesian Uhlan Regiment No. 2 on November 1, 1808 and appointed commander of this regiment on December 12, 1809. In the summer of 1811 he proved himself in dampening the peasant uprising in Upper Silesia.

During the Wars of Liberation , La Roche-Starkenfels fought in the battles near Großgörschen , Bautzen , Dresden , Leipzig , Arcis-sur-Aube , Paris and the battles near Haynau and Kulm . On May 19, 1813, he received the Iron Cross II. Class for Großgörschen and on June 4, 1813, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel . On September 21, 1813, La Roche-Starkenfels was appointed brigadier and charged with commanding the two guard cavalry regiments while maintaining his previous command. On December 8, 1813, he became a colonel. On December 16, 1814, he received 300 thalers as a gift, and on April 11, 1815, he was appointed brigade commander. In addition, on June 29, 1815, he was appointed commander of the Schwerin and Watzdorf brigades, whose previous commanders had fallen. On September 24th he was appointed commander of the 11th Cavalry Brigade. For this he was promoted to major general on November 1, 1815 with a patent from November 6, 1815.

On February 11, 1816, he received a gift of 1000 thalers, and on September 9, 1819, he received the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class at a military parade and on April 14, 1821 another gift of 600 thalers. In the spring of 1825 the general was sent to Warsaw as an observer for a major military exercise. While he was still in Warsaw, he was transferred to Schweidnitz as commandant on June 18, 1825. For his report on the exercise he received a reward of 1200 thalers for his expenses on July 5, 1825, and the service cross on July 24 . On May 5, 1829 he was given the character of Lieutenant General and on March 19, 1833, on his 50th anniversary in service, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. A little later he fell ill and retired on March 12, 1836 with a pension . After his death he was buried on April 17, 1838 in the garrison cemetery.

family

La Roche-Starkenfels married on December 4, 1809 in Königsberg Eleonore Prentzel (1782–1861), widowed von Scharden. The couple had a son:

  • Gustav (1810–1877), Prussian major a. D., Chairman of the Herold Association in Berlin ⚭ Natalie Kalnassy von Kalnaß, widowed von Puttkamer

In addition to her widow's pension, the widow received another 200 thalers a year from the king.
