Fritz Sonderland (born September 20, 1836 in Düsseldorf ; † June 13, 1896 there ) was a German painter and graphic artist from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

The little mishap , 1868
Happy Detention , 1894

The son of the well-known Düsseldorf painter, etcher , illustrator and lithographer Johann Baptist Sonderland began his engineering education. From 1853 to 1861 he followed his father and studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , where he made friends with the genre painters Hubert Salentin , Friedrich Hiddemann and Ernst Bosch . His teachers were Josef Wintergerst in the elementary class, Theodor Hildebrandt in the preparatory class and from 1858 Carl Friedrich Sohn and Eduard Bendemann in the composition and master class. There were also Carl Mosler (art history), Heinrich Mücke (anatomy and proportion theory) and Rudolf Wiegmann (building school).

In Hiddemann's studio he finally trained as a painter of anecdotal genre pictures . He traveled on the Rhine and Moselle , through Westphalia , into the Black Forest and into the Schwalm . His mostly ironic and humorous compositions became extremely popular and their design clearly relates to the works of Hiddemann and Benjamin Vautier . From the beginning of the 1860s he was represented with his work in exhibitions in Düsseldorf, Berlin , Munich (diploma 1876) and many other German cities, but also in Vienna , Glasgow , London (medal 1874), and Chicago (art exhibition of the world exhibition 1893) . Through reproductions in the widespread entertainment papers of the time - including "Daheim" , " Die Gartenlaube ", "Der Salon", " Illustrirte Zeitung " or " Über Land und Meer " - he achieved a high level of awareness. Not as well known as his father during his lifetime, his paintings still enjoy lasting popularity with auction houses to this day .

Sonderland was based and active in Düsseldorf all his life and belonged to the artists 'association Malkasten (KVM) and the academic artists' association "Orient".
