Postage stamps from Germany

A total of 14 special postage stamps appeared between March 2003 and January 2006 in the series Für den Sport . A Deutsche Post Numisblatt is also published annually, combining both collector's items (stamps and coins). The special stamps were not only intended to draw collectors' attention to the 2006 World Cup or serve as a souvenir for guests; the additional proceeds from the sale of the surcharge stamps were primarily used to support the German Sporthilfe Foundation's tasks in all areas of sport.

On Wednesday, February 8th, 2006, the new World Cup stamps were presented in the Federal Chancellery by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Federal Minister of Finance Peer Steinbrück . The postage stamps ran under the sports stamp series “For the Sport 2006”, which also included a stamp for the World Equestrian Games in August 2006 in Aachen . There were surcharges of 20 to 55 cents on all five stamps, which were traditionally intended to benefit the German Sports Aid to promote young talent in top-class sport. In the past 40 years, more than 117 million euros have gone to athletes from the proceeds.

The proceeds from the 10 euro sterling silver soccer coin flowed into the art and cultural program of the soccer World Cup. The federal government initiated this. It has now been implemented by the DFB - Kulturstiftung .

The Chancellor presented the World Cup stamps to the President of the Organizing Committee , Franz Beckenbauer . The motifs of the five stamps show the following motifs in detail: Stadium atmosphere with a sea of German flags, the FIFA World Cup Stadium in Munich , where the opening game took place (June 9, 2006), the Olympiastadion Berlin , where the final was played (July 9, 2006) and the official World Cup poster.

On May 4, 2006, the four above-mentioned surcharge stamps were also issued as a stamp block. Since this was just a kind of “new combination” of the stamps, there was no special first day cancellation . According to the regulations of the Deutsche Post AG, this block could not be canceled with the first day cancellation of February, as the date was months before the issue. In order to still be able to provide a “first day cancellation”, a special rectangular stamp was only used in the stamp office in Bonn.

On February 11, 2005, the then Federal Minister of the Interior Otto Schily (SPD) presented the “For Sport 2005” series of surcharges and the third 10 euro silver coin 2006 World Cup. The first copies went to the executive DFB president Dr. Theo Zwanziger , Deutsche Sporthilfe boss Hans-Ludwig Grüschow as well as the Berlin World Cup ambassador Michael Preetz and the World Cup mascot Goleo VI, who is depicted on a postage stamp.

The motto of the five sports postage stamps in 2005 was "International Sports Events in Germany". With the Nordic Ski World Championships in Oberstdorf, the International German Gymnastics Festival in Berlin and the Fencing World Championships in Leipzig, three stamp motifs take up the three sporting highlights of 2005 in Germany.

Two stamps motifs pointed to the 2006 World Cup: the Football Globe of André Heller and the World Cup mascot Goleo VI.

At the presentation, Schily said: The selection of major sporting events as stamp motifs shows that Germany is an internationally respected sporting location and an attractive host country: “The Federal Government has always been a reliable partner of the German sporting associations for hosting the World Cup and European Championship . The international world and European associations know about the organizational strength of the German associations, the enthusiasm for sport among German fans and the active support of the federal government in organizing such events. "

On the occasion of this World Cup, the Federal Republic of Germany issued four silver commemorative coins with a face value of 10 euros each and one gold coin at 100 euros.
