Futsal isa marginal sport in the Czech Republic that has been enjoying increasing popularity in recent years. Over 10,000 playersactivelypractice this sport under the umbrella of the Czech Football Association ČMFS . The first Czech futsal league is held on a semi-professional basis, the number of spectators is in the mid three-digit range, comparable to the third, sometimes also second, football league. In October 2005, over 5,000 spectators saw the European Cup encounter between Era-Pack Chrudim and Dynamo Moscow .

The state television company Česká Televize broadcasts selected league, European cup and international matches live. The daily sports newspaper Deník Sport also reports on futsal, and other sports magazines contain at least the top division results. Where the respective futsal team is more successful than other sports, the sport is given more space in the relevant regional daily newspaper.

history

Futsal has been played in what was then Czechoslovakia since the 1960s, with a surge in 1974 after Peňarol's visit to Montevideo . Later a Czechoslovak championship was played. After the dissolution of the country on January 1, 1993, a nationwide Czech league was introduced in the first half of the year, with Ajax Novesta Zlín becoming the first Czech champions . From the second season onwards, there was a change to the autumn / spring rhythm.

In 1990 the Czechoslovak national team played their first international match against Italy. In qualifying for the 1992 World Cup, the selection took part without success. The Czech team did not qualify for a major tournament - the European Futsal Championship - until 2001. In 2004, 2008 and 2012 the Czech national team took part in the Futsal World Championship . The greatest successes to date have been winning the bronze medal at the 2003 European Championships in Italy and at the 2010 European Championships in Hungary. At the 2005 European Championships in their own country, the Czechs were eliminated after the group stage.
