The Götheborg is a replica of the East Indiaman Götheborg I of the Swedish East India Company, built in 1738 . The ship was shipwrecked on September 12, 1745 on the Hunnebadan rock in the Gothenburg harbor entrance. There were no fatalities and a large part of the cargo could be salvaged.

The wreck was rediscovered in 1984 by divers from the Swedish Marine Archaeological Society .

On June 11, 1995 a 1: 1 copy was laid down . It took years, right up there with old methods and with the original materials (oak and pine wood, hand-forged nails, hand braided rope) and at the same time modern equipment and technology for offshore use rebuilt finally the June 2003 launch saw. The ship was christened in September 2004 by Queen Silvia of Sweden.

On October 2, 2005, the Götheborg set out for China , in July 2006 Guangzhou was reached, only to return to the home port on June 9, 2007 with great media attention.

The Gothenburg undertook since then several tours through the Baltic Sea as an ambassador of the Swedish economy and culture, such as on 19 June 2010 on the occasion of the royal wedding in Stockholm or at the Sail Amsterdam and the Sail Bremerhaven .

The ship is owned by the Svenska Ostindiska Companiet AB Foundation , and its construction and operation were financed with donations from Swedish companies.

On May 26, 2016, the foundation announced that it would not be possible to continue operation due to the high costs and that the ship would therefore be for sale.

Structure and equipment

Figurehead of Gothenburg

The Götheborg has a total of five decks : Below the sun deck is the weather deck with the captain's cabin, navigation room and fire station. In addition to side boats and lifeboats, there are items typical of a sailing ship of this type, from the ship's bell to the spill to the steering wheel, which was built exactly according to the historical model. A purely mechanical power transmission is used here; there is no support from a hydraulic rowing machine , so that up to four men have to operate the rudder if the weather makes it necessary.

The cannon deck follows below the weather deck. It is equipped with ten cannons that were used in the original to defend against pirates and are now used for gun salutes during prominent missions. The ship's hospital , galley and carpenter's workshop are also located there .

The crew quarters , sailmakers and storage rooms are located on the lower deck . In the deck below there is finally the engine room , each with two power plants and engines, as well as the various fuel and sanitary tanks and the washing machines and refrigerators / freezers.

The rigging essentially consists of approx. 1,000 wooden components (blocks, stage, maiden blocks) that have been handcrafted from elm wood . The yards are made of spruce wood . 20 tons of ropes made of hand-woven hemp and 26 sails made of hand-sewn English linen complete the imposing impression of the ship.

The stern is adorned next to the double stand (East Indiamans still enjoy the right to use this stand to give the impression of a naval ship) a wooden sculpture of the Triton . According to legend, he calls the wind for the ship with his conch .
