Günter Millahn

Günter Millahn , sometimes wrongly Günther Millahn (born February 1, 1930 in Neu Zippendorf ; † March 19, 2018 in Pinnow ) was a German forester , educator and hunter . He is known nationwide for his books on hunting topics. He lived in Godern .

Life

Günter Millahn spent his childhood on a forest farm near Schwerin . His father Walter Millahn made him familiar with forestry , hunting and the training of hunting dogs at an early age . After graduating from school, he completed an apprenticeship as a skilled forest worker , then attended the state forest school in Raben Steinfeld and studied forest science in Tharandt . In 1967 he was at the German Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Berlin with the dissertation research on the occurring game damage in the Forest District Neuhaus / Elbe and suggestions to avert a doctorate . From 1957 until its closure in 1995 he worked as a lecturer at the Mecklenburg Forestry College Raben Steinfeld, the history of which he published in 1997 in the book Raben Steinfeld. Processed the history of a forest school . In addition to silviculture , his lessons also dealt with the training of hunting dogs.

In doing so, Millahn brought in the experience he had gained in hunting small and large game in Mecklenburg's territories since 1944 . He regards the hunt with the dog as an indispensable requirement for an animal welfare-friendly hunt. He attached great importance to the correct training of hunting dogs and practiced it himself for decades. Already his first specialist book, the dressage calendar. Guidelines for the Young Hunting Dog Handler (1958) dealt with this topic. At the suggestion of his students and fellow hunters, he summarized his training system in the training calendar for hunting dogs , which appeared in 1996 as the second volume of his autobiography Ein Jägerleben in Mecklenburg . In 1998, Millahn followed this up with The Just Management of the Hunting Dog.

As a retiree, he also wrote a biography of the forester Fritz Hagemeister (1999), the historical perspective Hunting in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern yesterday and today (2001) and the manual The weidgerechte management of wild boar (2001). He also published regularly in hunting and forest-related journals .

Millahn's grave is located in the quiet forest of Schwerin Lakes on the idyllic Schelfwerder peninsula.
