The Marlboro Syclone (1991, 10 copies)

The GMC Syclone was a high-performance version of the GMC Sonoma pickup . It was produced in the model years 1991 and 1992 and in 1992 brought out the same motorized GMC Typhoon based on the Jimmy . There was another high-performance version, the Sonoma GT . This offered less engine power, but was considered a sister model.

During its manufacturing time, the Syclone was the fastest factory-built pickup in the world. Auto magazines compared its acceleration ability to that of a number of sports cars, including the Corvette and, in a popular Car and Driver magazine test, a Ferrari . The Syclone had a six-cylinder engine with turbocharger , all-wheel drive , ABS for all four wheels - the equipment list was more like that of a Porsche than that of a pickup.

Both the Syclone and the Typhoon ( syty ) had 8 cm² turbocharger of Mitsubishi TD06-17C and a water / air intercooler of Garrett . The pistons, cylinder head gasket, exhaust system and intake tract with injection system were changed on the 4.3 l Vortec V6 engine. a. through the 48 mm carburettor housing with two throttle valves from the 5.7 l small block -V8. All SyTys had the four-stage BorgWarner automatic 700R4 ( 4L60 ) and the all-wheel differential from the same manufacturer with a torque distribution of 35% (front axle) to 65% (rear axle). Both vehicles had sporty changes to the standard chassis and, unlike the high-volume models on which they were based, were not designed for driving off-road . The Syclone was the first factory-made pickup with ABS on all four wheels. The power was 280 bhp (209 kW) and the torque was 475 Nm. A new Syclone accelerates from 0-100 km / h in 4.7 s and covers the quarter mile in 13.4 s with a top speed of 156.8 km / h.

In 1991 the Syclone was only available in black. The 1992 models were offered in a wider range of colors before production ceased. 2,995 Syclone were manufactured in 1991 and 2,200 in 1992. 113 were exported, 31 of which were returned to the USA. Some Syclones also went to Saudi Arabia , where they were converted to metric sizes, a chip for leaded gasoline, and a muffler in place of the catalytic converter.

In 1991 there were two privately produced special models:

  • The Marlboro Syclone was - according to the Hemmings Muscle Machine magazine from January 2006 - the prize for ten lucky winners of the 1992 Marlboro race. With the help of the designer Larry Shinoda , who designed the Corvette and the Boss Mustang, an astonishing transformation of the ten black syclones took place:
    • ASC converted the roof in the style of a Targa, the roof insert of which could be attached to the bed.
    • ASC installed a sliding window in the rear.
    • There was a tin Guidon tonneau roof.
    • Boyd Coddington Cobra wheels with Marlboro emblem on the axle caps and Goodyear Eagle GS-C tires were fitted.
    • Red "Hot Licks" paint from PPG was applied.
    • Graphic Concepts provided running white stripes.
    • Recaro leather seats were installed.
    • There was a five-point Simpson racing network .
    • A custom Momo "Evolution" steering wheel was installed.
    • The cars had Sony sound systems .
    • The engine control has been upgraded with a PROMPaq power chip .
    • A chassis from BELL Tech lowered it by 3 ″ (75 mm).
    • The exhaust system was exchanged for a rustproof copy from Borla .
  • Three Indy Syclones were entered in the Indy 500 race on May 24, 1992. Their only change from the series was a sticker pack. One of these Indy pickups was converted into PPG's Syclone Pace Truck , even if it wasn't the official pace car. Crucial changes were made to him, e.g. B. a multi-color paint in silver, magenta and light blue, a lamp holder permanently attached to the roof, a fuel tank for racing and a fire extinguishing system.

Syclone, Typhoon and Sonoma GT were built for GM by Production Automotive Services in Troy, Michigan and sold through their dealer network.

The drive mechanism of the Syclone and Typhoon was previously used for the Pontiac Sunbird GT, which was discontinued in 1990, a year before the Syclone appeared.
