GWLT is a hardcore punk / crossover band from Munich, founded in 2013 .
history
GWLT was founded in 2013 in Munich by singer David Mayonga and guitarist Chris Zehetleitner. Later, Florian Gudzent was joined by a second guitarist, as well as bassist Michael Kokus and drummer Fabian Füss. Zehetleitner, Füss and Gudzent previously played in the well-known punk bands Emil Bulls , The Blackout Argument and The New Recruits . Singer Mayonga is also known as an MC under the name Roger Rekless .
In the year it was founded, the group released their debut EP Without Beginning Without End with three tracks on Acuity.Music , the subsidiary of the independent record company Let It Burn Records, initially on a digital level. A release on a physical basis took place with the release of the second EP Psychogenesis in times of the Apocalypse on May 23, 2014. The two EPs belong to an EP trilogy with the EP We are no heroes released on October 10, 2014 , which later became an EP -Trias was reissued in the bundle. The physical version of all EPs was released through Cutwork Collective, another Let It Burn Records sub-label. With the song Frontex International , the group supported the Hardcore Help Foundation , which among other things compressed songs from known and unknown scene groups on a compilation and supports social projects with their income. In the course of the refugee crisis , the proceeds went, among other things, to initial reception centers.
On July 13, 2015, Marcus Staiger of Nuclear Blast announced the founding of a new sub-label, Arising Empire , whose first signings include GWLT. Before signing with Arising Empire, the group released the song Because we are many with a music video. In addition, the musicians started the Because we are many campaign , which is involved in social and political projects apart from music. Another EP was released on November 13, 2015, Die Grundmauern der Furcht , exclusively as a record , limited to 1000 records. The debut album Stein & Eisen was announced in late 2015 and finally released on January 29, 2016 via Arising Empire. The album was recorded in the Kohlkeller Studios with producer Kristian "Kohlen" Kohlmannslehner . Two pre-listening concerts took place in October 2015 in the underground in Cologne and in the Berlin club Cassiopeia .
Between January 30, 2016 and March 6, 2016, the group will be playing as part of the Togetherfest Tour through several German cities, as well as in Austria , Belgium , the Netherlands and the United Kingdom . The group plays as the opener for Gorilla Biscuits , Modern Life Is War and Touché Amoré . In addition, the first appearances for the summer are already known.
style
Ulf Imwiehe from the intro describes GWLT's music in his album review of Stein & Eisen as “dull-pounded Bollo hardcore with simple groove metal riffs and sharp-tongued German rap”. Michael Klaas from the online magazine Metal.de describes the music as a "hardcore-influenced, catchy way of playing alternative metal ."
Chris Zehetleitner, who has his musical roots in hardcore punk , is responsible for the composition of the music . Singer David Mayonga, who appears alongside the band as MC Roger Rekless, uses shoutings , among other things , and also works with the spoken vocals that are common for rap . The band claims to cleverly combine both musical worlds.
In the lyrics, the musicians mainly deal with socially critical issues, expressing their suffering in the face of hatred , sedition and racism . In an interview with the German Smash Mag , David Mayonga and Chris Zehetleitner stated that a central theme on the debut album is the feelings of anger and fear . In the conversation with Markus Tils, you described that both feelings can be closely related in psychology. The piece "Hannah Arendt", which can also be found on the debut album, was written for the Jewish German-American political theorist Hannah Arendt , who reported on the Eichmann trial in the 1960s . The lyrics are only written in German and, according to Ronny Bittner from Rock Hard, are brilliant due to the catchy songwriting. In an older review, Bittner accused the band of embodying a “fat pants” and “bad guy attitude”. However, he already praised the group's lyrics in this review. In an older review by Frank Engelhardt in FUZE Magazine, he predicted that with GWLT “in the worst case, we could soon have the German Deez Nuts with content, in the best case a new movement with impetus for the local scene”.
