Gabriel Mbilingi CSSp (born January 17, 1958 in Bândua, Bié , Angola ) is an Angolan clergyman. He is the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Lubango in Angola.

Life

Gabriel Mbilingi attended elementary school at the Catholic Mission and entered the Spiritan Minor Seminary in Huambo in 1970 . After studying philosophy at the inter-diocesan Christ the King Seminary in Huambo he joined on 10 April 1980 religious community in the Holy Ghost. He made his profession on April 9, 1983 and was ordained a priest on February 26, 1984 . From 1988 to 1992 he studied at the French Pontifical Seminary in Rome .

On October 15, 1999 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of the Lwena diocese by Pope John Paul II . On 6 January 2000 he donated Pope John Paul II himself in. St. Peter's Basilica , the episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia Giovanni Battista Re and Marcello Zago OMI . One day later, after his resignation, he succeeded his predecessor José Próspero da Ascensão Puaty as Bishop of Lwena.

On December 11, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as Coadjutor Archbishop of Lubango .

Mbilingi was elected on July 22, 2007 in the General Assembly of the Bishops 'Conference for Southern Africa (Imbisa) in Luanda , the capital of Angola, as the new President of the Bishops' Conferences of Southern Africa.

With the resignation of Archbishop Zacarias Kamwenho on September 6, 2009, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Lubango. On June 29, 2010 he received as the new Metropolitan of the Church Province of Lubango from Pope Benedict XVI. in St. Peter's Basilica, the pallium .

From 2009 to 2015 he was chairman of the Bishops 'Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST) and from 2013 to 2019 he was chairman of the Symposium of the Bishops' Conferences of Africa and Madagascar .
