  • the maintenance of the populations of numerous rare and endangered animal and plant species, including fern species, that occur in these habitats,
  • the securing of an excellent example of spring outflows from the Dreisam alluvial fan. "

Geology and hydrology

The Gaisenmoos lies on the edge of the Dreisam alluvial fan and southeast of the Blankenberg ( 215.5  m above sea  level ), a loosely covered Jura floe, which was created after the lowering of the earth's crust in the Upper Rhine Rift. This floe dams the groundwater flow from the Dreisam from the Black Forest, so that here the groundwater reaches the surface of the earth, or sometimes emerges as springs. The area is traversed by branching channels leading from the north, some of them are more than a meter deep. The Gaisenmoos is traversed by a wide depression, which comes from the east. Creeks coming from the east continue to carry water temporarily or permanently, the current course is artificial. Due to the dammed groundwater flow, water flows in the streams even when there is no more inflow from the east. The associated waterlogging resulted in soils containing peat.
