The Arlesheimer See in the natural area Freiburger Bucht is a body of water west of Freiburg im Breisgau in the district of Tiengen . The lake has open water of about 8 hectares and silting areas where swimming and diving plants, reeds and Großseggen- Ried occur. In places the water is also surrounded by a swamp forest. The state forest in the area of the Arlesheimer See is administratively attached to the St. Georgen Revier.

The lake is named after the Swiss community and the former prince-bishop's seat of Arlesheim near Basel and is a reminder of the historical relationship between Tiengen and the Catholic Basel cathedral chapter , which resides in Arlesheim and was the patronage of the Protestant Tienger village church from the Reformation until 1806 .

history

The lake was created in the period from March 1, 1960 to December 1, 1960 as a quarry pond in the course of gravel mining for the construction of the A 5 from Karlsruhe to Basel . It was then expanded in 1964 and 1966, creating the bays and the two islands. It is the only one of the 40 new quarry ponds that were created as part of the construction of the A5 motorway, which became a nature reserve. The entire area has been fenced off since 1967. A special feature of the creation of this lake was that the topsoil was not pushed into the lake as usual after it was dredged and so it was initially very poor in nutrients. This situation has changed due to the large number of water birds that have populated the lake and a stream that rises from the moss forest and its leaves.

Protected areas

On August 8, 1966, at the instigation of the former German Association for Bird Protection, Group Freiburg, the lake in the moss forest was designated as a nature reserve with a size of 22.8 hectares under the name Arlesheimersee and is managed by the Freiburg Regional Council under the protection area number 3.070. It is classified in IUCN Category IV, a biotope and species protection area. The WPDA ID is 81315 and corresponds to the European CDDA code and the EUNIS number.

The Arlesheimer See is also part of the 3,127.5 hectare FFH area Breisgau . Due to the high number of birds detected there, the Arlesheimer See is recognized as a European bird sanctuary and therefore part of the 3617.4 hectare SPA area Mooswälder near Freiburg . The protected area is looked after by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU), NABU-Gruppe Freiburg eV.

One problem for nature conservation is the expansion and new construction of the Karlsruhe – Basel route planned for 2020 along the A5 motorway , as the distance between the motorway and the nature reserve is only supposed to be around 100 m.

Occurring species

The selection of this lake as a nature reserve was initiated by the then Freiburg Forestry Council and ornithologist Hans Kleiber. Since then it has developed into an important resting and feeding place for birds. A total of more than 160 bird species were identified. Of these, 48 species breed in the area of the lake. In addition, 31 dragonfly species and two bat species were counted.
