Galeazzo Gualdo Priorato (born July 23, 1606 in Vicenza ; † 1678 ibid; actually Galeazzo Conte Gualdo Priorato ) was an Italian mercenary , historian , geographer and diplomat . He came from an old family of Italian counts . After a long military career, he wrote numerous historical works on European rulers and cities. Among other things, he wrote the story of Emperor Ferdinand III. and Leopold I. as well as the first biography of Wallenstein .

Life

Galeazzo Gualdo Priorato initially embarked on a military career. At the age of 15 he entered the service of Friedrich Heinrich von Orange and changed his employer several times during the Eighty and Thirty Years' War . He fought on both the Protestant and the Catholic side. In 1625 he traveled to England in the service of Count Peter Ernst II von Mansfeld to recruit new troops . After the crushing defeat of Mansfeld on April 25, 1626 in Dessau by the army of Wallenstein, Galeazzo returned to the Netherlands . On the way he narrowly escaped death in a shipwreck. Back in Dutch service, he took part in the siege of La Rochelle between 1627 and 1628 . In 1637 he accompanied an expedition sent by Prince Moritz von Nassau to conquer Portuguese trading posts along the African coast. After that he stayed with his father in Italy for a while, until this time he entered the service of Wallenstein. In 1643 he led a cuirassier regiment of the Venetian troops as a colonel . At the beginning of the peace negotiations in June 1645, which finally led to the Peace of Westphalia , Galeazzo Gualdo Priorato entered the service of Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria . But on August 3, 1645 his troops were defeated in the battle of Alerheim . Galeazzo then returned to Italy and ended his military career.

Historian and diplomat

Subsequently, Galeazzo Gualdo Priorato shifted his activity to historical studies and diplomacy. In 1652 he was called to Vincennes in France to write a history about Cardinal Jules Mazarin . During his stay in Vincennes he was awarded the dignity of knight by the Order of Michael . In 1656 he stayed again in Rome, where he was awarded the title of Nobilis romanus . During this time he entered the service of Queen Christine of Sweden as chamberlain in Rome . In this capacity he made another trip to France in 1659 and to Regensburg in 1664 . In the same year he became imperial counselor and historiographer in the service of Emperor Leopold I. He returned to his native Vicenza, where he stayed until his death. There he wrote his history about Leopold I. Finally, in 1676, the Republic of Venice awarded him the dignity of Knight of San Marco .
