Galenia is a genus of plants fromthe afternoon flower family (Aizoaceae).

description

Vegetative characteristics

The species of the genus Galenia grow as shrubs or perennial herbaceous plants . Their internodes are papillate or bare and their branches are often one-sided.

The opposite or alternate leaves are lanceolate to needle-shaped. Your epidermis is covered with more or less low papillae, which initially shine and later turn white.

Generative characteristics

The sessile flowers stand together in more or less rich cymes , which can often be easily distinguished from the sometimes large vegetative part of the bush. Your four- to five-lobed (rarely three-lobed) perigone is small. There are eight to ten stamens present, the filaments of which elongate three-fold when the anthers open.

The dry, leathery, tear-open or non-tear-open capsule fruits have three to five compartments. Occasionally there is some swelling tissue. Each compartment contains a pendulous, kidney-shaped to rounded and most of the flattened seed .

Subgenus Galenia : Galenia africana
Subgenus Kolleria : Galenia pubescens

Locations

The Galenia species grow mainly in dry areas in the lowlands, often in ecologically disturbed areas next to roads in gravel soils.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Galenia is distributed from southern Angola in southern Africa to the Western Cape.
