The Gate of Heaven Cemetery is a Roman Catholic cemetery in Hawthorne , Westchester County , New York , about 15 miles north of New York City , It was opened on West Stevens Avenue in 1917. Among the most famous people buried here is the baseball player Babe Ruth , whose grave bears an epitaph of Cardinal Francis Spellman and is continuously honored by the laying down of baseball balls, bats and hats. In addition to a few other baseball players and athletes, three former mayors of New York City and other politicians are also buried here. Adjacent to the Garden Mausoleum is a station on the Metro North Railroad , where four trains stop daily, two in each direction.
