Geography and transport links

The 222 hectare area is located about two kilometers southeast of the core town of Priestewitz on the county road K 8553. The Leipzig – Dresden railway line runs through the town , separating Geißlitz from the neighboring village of Baßlitz. The B 101 runs west.

The Bierlichtbach , a tributary of the Hopfenbach , flows on the western edge of the village.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1288 as Gizlewitz . The place name is interpreted as "settlement of the people of a Gisilo" . Other forms of the place name were in the course of time: Gizzelwitz (1296), Gisselwicz, Gysselwicz, Gisilwicz (1350), Gyselwicz (1378), Geuselitz (1551), Geiseliz (1555) and finally Geißlitz in 1791.

The place was once laid out as an openwork cul-de-sac village with a striped corridor similar to a win . The Saxon homeland and cave researcher Otto Mörtzsch wrote in his 1935 work “Topographical Description of the Authority in Grossenhain” that a clear round core could still be seen in Geißlitz . There have been a few changes of ownership over the centuries. Mentioned as an allod in 1350 , the place paid prayers for Hayn in 1406 . In 1551, Geißlitz was partly an official village. At this time Geißliz is also a thing chair . Justice is pronounced by a rolling judge.

Ecclesiastically, the place, which in 1406 comprised a size of 12 hooves, was incorporated into Lenz since 1540. The school had to be attended by the children of the village in neighboring Baßlitz, which only got its own school in 1859, which was rebuilt in 1887. Around 1840 there are 100 inhabitants in Geißlitz.

On January 1, 1950, the previously independent communities Geißlitz and Böhla were incorporated into Baßlitz. Since January 1, 1999, Baßlitz has been part of the Priestewitz community .
