The General Public Prosecutor's Office in Düsseldorf is one of 24 public  prosecutor's offices in Germany and, alongside the general public prosecutor's offices in Hamm and Cologne, one of three in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

The General Public Prosecutor's Office in Düsseldorf performs judicial and administrative tasks as an intermediate authority. The most important task is the exercise of the technical and official supervision over the public prosecutor's offices of the district and over their employees in order to guarantee a uniform decision-making practice. It is carried out by handling complaints, evaluating reports and business reviews.

In April 2018, the central office for the prosecution of terrorist and terrorist-motivated crimes in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (ZenTer NRW) was set up at the Attorney General in Düsseldorf . The General Public Prosecutor's Office in Düsseldorf is the youngest of the three North Rhine-Westphalian public prosecutor's offices. It was set up in 1906 at the same time as the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court and took over the districts of the former district courts of Cleve , Düsseldorf and Elberfeld from the Cologne Public Prosecutor's Office and the district of the Duisburg Regional Court from the Hamm Public Prosecutor's Office .
