Life

Youth and Education (until 1719)

Georg Sebastian's house in Thüngersheim

Georg Sebastian Urlaub was born on May 9, 1685 in Thüngersheim, Lower Franconia . His family were distinguished citizens of the city. The grandfather Johannes Urlaub (* 1593) was already a councilor in the town council, he was followed by Georg Sebastian's father, Aegidius Urlaub, called Gilg (1621–1696). The father, who was only a skilled painter, was married twice, Georg Sebastian was from the second marriage to Maria.

The sources are largely silent about the later painter's youth. Georg Sebastian started his apprenticeship in 1697, at the age of twelve, in order to learn the painting trade. The master from whom Georg Sebastian learned, however, is not mentioned. The apprenticeship was completed around 1701 and Georg Sebastian set off on a journey. Urlaub completed his master craftsman examination between 1709 and 1710 and returned to Thüngersheim.

In 1711 Georg Sebastian married Anna Maria Feser, who, like him, came from Thüngersheim. The budding painter also built a house in Thüngersheim, which can still be found today at Untere Hauptstrasse 46. In 1713, Georg Anton was born as the couple's first child. He should follow in his father's footsteps. Anna Maria gave birth to a total of nine children, three of whom were to become painters , in addition to Georg Anton Georg Christian and Johann Georg .

Since there are no records whatsoever about the training of Georg Sebastian Urlaub, different masters are named as trainers. Maybe he got to know art painting with Sebastian Reinhard in Bamberg , or did an apprenticeship with Oswald Onghers . The first artistic works from Urlaub date back to 1714. He made two oil paintings of a cycle of Christ for the monastery church in Schönau.

In Bamberg and Würzburg (until 1763)

In the period that followed, however, Urlaub shifted its focus from the Würzburg bishopric to the neighboring duchy of Bamberg . It is first documented here in 1719. Urlaub worked in the Forchheim town church St. Martin and around 1720 made an altar sheet for the village church in Dörfleins near Hallstadt. During his time in Bamberg, Urlaub worked closely with other craftsmen. Johann Dientzenhofer , Leonhard Gollwitzer , Johann Sebastian Degler , Franz Anton Schlott and Johann Jakob Vogel were among his colleagues.

Urlaub reached the height of his work in the 1820s. He designed the parish church of Dormitz and possibly even helped with the painting of Weissenstein Castle in Pommersfelden . From 1725 Georg Sebastian returned to the Würzburg area and recommended himself here with a job in the parish church of his hometown Thüngersheim. In 1725 he again received an order from the Franciscan monastery in Schönau .

The Franciscans recommended the painter and Urlaub was also allowed to supply the branch in Würzburg . In 1743 Urlaub was involved with the painting of the mirror cabinet of the Würzburg residence together with two of his sons . This second high point was followed by an almost ten-year career break. Possibly the painter Georg Sebastian experienced a personal creative crisis or the great competition in Würzburg led to a collapse in orders.

In 1755, holidays were again recorded in the Schönau monastery. His wife died in 1758, and one year later, in 1759, the painter carried his eldest son Georg Anton to his grave. In the same year, Urlaub married again, this time with Anna Apollonia Treutlein from Thüngersheim. Georg Sebastian Urlaub died on May 20, 1763 at the age of seventy-four and was buried in the town where he was born.
