Georg Utz (born August 22, 1935 in Kornwestheim ) is a former German wrestler .

Career

Georg Utz grew up in Kornwestheim and started wrestling as a child at the athletics sports club there (ASV). After many good results in the school and youth sector at regional level, his 3rd place at the German youth championship in 1953 in Friesenheim in the class up to 70 kg in free style was his best result of that time. He made a big leap forward in 1956 when he was a German junior middleweight champion, Greco-Roman. Style before Theo Harth from Frankfurt-Griesheim and Willi Lohneiß from Untertürkheim. He won his first DM title in 1959 in both styles. In the 1960 Olympic year, he tried to qualify in both styles for the Olympic Games in Rome , although he had to undergo severe meniscus surgery in January of that year. Given the state of medicine at the time, this meant a training loss of 3 months. In the Greco-Roman style, he still came in second behind Lothar Metz from Rostock , third in the World Cup in 1958 , but still in second place in front of the vice world champion in 1958 Horst Hess from Dortmund . In the free style it went even better for him, because he won the Olympic qualification in the middleweight division before the 1956 Olympic champion Johann Sterr from Neuaubing and the World Cup third from 1959 Lothar Lippa from Halle . At the Olympic Games he came in 8th place.

At the world championships in 1962 in Toledo / USA he competed in both styles. In the Greco-Roman style he took a good 5th place and 8th place in the free style.

In the course of his career, he won international matches or tournaments over strong opponents such as the Soviet athlete Valeri Iwankin, the French René Schiermeyer , Mansour Hasrati from Iran , Per-Arne Ytterström from Sweden and Tevfik Kış from Turkey .

Georg Utz ended his wrestling career in 1963. He worked as a trainer in his home club ASV Kornwestheim, which he never left. Later he was also chairman of this association for over 20 years.

Georg Utz was a trained machine fitter and switched to the insurance industry in the 1970s. In his home town of Kornwestheim he ran a flourishing general agency for the industry leader until his retirement.
