Georg Wilhelm Vestner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Wilhelm Vestner (also: Westner ; born September 1, 1677 in Schweinfurt ; † November 24 or December 1, 1740 in Nuremberg ) was a German medalist and die cutter . Vestner was one of the most important artisans in his field in southern Germany during the Baroque period . Today his works are exhibited in numerous museums around the world.

Life

Vestner was born the son of a gingerbread baker . He first learned his father's trade and developed a great talent for cutting the shapes for the gingerbread. In order to further develop his talent, he now also learned painting from Johann Daniel Preissler and modeling from Metzner, a sculptor. The medalist Uhl from Schweinfurt, a relative of his mother and his cousin, taught him the art of stamp and medal cutting as well as engraving. He later went to Reisern, including to Berlin and Weimar , where he was able to perfect his skills.

Vestner settled permanently in Nuremberg from 1704 and entered the service of the Free Imperial City, but also ran a gingerbread bakery there. He cut numerous stamps for the city of Nuremberg and was appointed Bishop Würzburg Court Medalist in 1720 . The Nuremberg Münzwardein did not allow him to carry out his work at home. It was not until 1728 that he received an imperial privilege to mint medals in his own workshop. He now gave up his gingerbread bakery and devoted himself entirely to the art of medallion. In 1732 Vestner became a spa Bavarian court and chamber medalist.

Georg Wilhelm Vestner died on November 24, 1740 at the age of 63 in Nuremberg. His son Andreas Vestner (1707–1754) became a medalist like his father. From 1726 he was a partner in his father's workshop.
