George Buta (born May 4, 1993 in Brașov ) is a Romanian biathlete and former cross-country skier .

Career

George Buta starts for CSS Fundata . Since 2010 he has competed in cross-country skiing races, first in junior races, and later also in races in the Balkan Cup and FIS races . The highlight of the sport was participation in the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2011 in Liberec , where he finished 54th in the 10-kilometer classic, 58th in the 7.5-kilometer freestyle and 79th in the freestyle sprint qualification. For the 2011/12 season Buta switched to biathlon.

Buta made his international debut in biathlon at the junior races of the European Biathlon Championships 2012 in Osrblie , where a 34th place in the individual was the best result. The results at the Biathlon European Championships 2013 in Bansko were much better . The Romanian finished 17th in the individual, fifth in the sprint, 16th in the pursuit and eleventh in the mixed relay. In 2014 he was always placed in the top 30, the best individual result was a 22nd place in the pursuit race. Buta first competed at the Biathlon Junior World Championships in Obertilliach in 2013 and achieved 35th place in the individual and tenth place in the relay as the best results. 2014 in Presque Isle was a 15th place in the singles best result.

Buta made his men's debut in 2012 in Ridnaun in the IBU Cup and was 63rd in a sprint and 15th in a mixed relay race with Florina Ioana Cîrstea , Orsolya Tófalvi and Gheorghe Pop . At the start of the 2014/15 season, Buta was promoted to the Romanian Biathlon World Cup team. He had his first use in a mixed relay race, which he finished on the side of Réka Ferencz , Luminița Pișcoran and Cornel Puchianu in 20th place. In Hochfilzen he contested the first individual race and was 84th in a sprint. In Ruhpolding he achieved his best performance so far with a 69th place in a sprint race. In Nové Město na Moravě he competed with Éva Tófalvi in the first ever single mixed relay race in the World Cup and was 14th. The first international championships for men were the 2015 European Biathlon Championships in Otepää . Buta was used in all three possible individual races and was 48th in the individual, 26th in the sprint and 40th in the pursuit.

In 2018 Buta took part in the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang , where he finished 37th in the sprint.
