George Louis Victor Henry Serge Mountbatten, 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven (born December 6, 1892 in Darmstadt , † April 8, 1938 in London ) was a German - British nobleman and British naval officer. He was a member of the Battenberg family , a branch of the Hessian ruling family . Through his mother, he was also a member of the British royal family . He was the older brother of Lord Louis Mountbatten and the uncle of the current Duke of Edinburgh .

Life

He was born in 1892 as His Highness Prince George Louis Victor Henry Serge von Battenberg . His parents were the British admiral of Hessian origin Prince Ludwig Alexander von Battenberg (1854-1921) and Princess Victoria Alberta of Hesse and near Rhine (1863-1950), a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and sister of the last Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt .

He entered the Royal Navy in 1910 , attended the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth , served in World War I and retired from active service in 1932 with the rank of Commander . In 1937 he was promoted to the rank of captain as a reserve officer . In 1916 he was made Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order , and in 1932 he was promoted to Knight Grand Cross of the same order.

In his youth, George fell in love with his cousin Tatiana Nikolaevna Romanova , the second daughter of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. He named his only daughter after her. On November 15, 1916, Prince George von Battenberg married Countess Nadja Michailowna Romanowa de Torby (1896–1963), the second daughter of the Russian Grand Duke Mikhail Michailowitsch Romanow (1861–1929) and Countess Sophie von Merenberg de Torby (1868–1927 ) in London ).

When in July 1917 in the wake of the anti-German mood of the British public during World War I, King George V renounced all German titles for himself and his family and called on his relatives to do the same, Georg's father Ludwig Alexander von Battenberg also gave his Hessian titles from. He also Anglicized the family name "Battenberg" to "Mountbatten" and on November 7, 1917 King George V awarded him the British nobility titles Marquess of Milford Haven , Earl of Medina and Viscount Alderney . When his father died in 1921, he inherited his British title as 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven and thereby became a member of the British House of Lords . He and his wife had an open relationship , particularly in the 1920s and 1930s . Both had relationships with people of both sexes . Lady Mountbatten's affair with Gloria Morgan-Vanderbilt (1904–1965) is known. In the custody battle (1934) between Morgan-Vanderbilt and her sister-in-law Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875-1942), Gloria's way of life and changing liaisons, including the lesbian relationship of his wife Lady Nadja Mountbatten, became known. The relationship became the focus of a high-profile legal battle in the United States . In the course of his life, Lord Milford Haven assembled an extensive and valuable collection of erotic art , which after his death was given to the British Library Museum on permanent loan .

George Mountbatten, 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven, died on April 8, 1938 of complications from bone cancer . His marriage had two children:
