life and work

After graduating from high school, Gerd Röpke studied physics at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig from 1959 to 1964 . After his doctorate as Dr. rer. nat. in the field of theoretical physics ( on the calculation of the energy values and transition probabilities of the multiple anharmonic oscillator by means of functional integration ) in 1966 he was a senior scientific assistant at the physics section of the Technical University of Dresden until 1977 . In 1973 he completed his habilitation there with the thesis on calculating magnetic moments and their dynamics in some models of solid-state magnetism . In 1977 he went to the University of Rostock , where he was initially appointed professor and in 1987 he was appointed associate professor and in 1992 full professor. In 2009 he retired. Gerd Röpke has published more than 400 scientific articles in specialist journals and conference proceedings. He was also the author or co-author of several monographs. His main areas of work are statistical physics , solid state and plasma physics, and nuclear physics .

Functions

After reunification, Röpke became the first president of the Physical Society of the GDR. From 1991 to 1994 he was a board member of the German Physical Society (DPG). From 1990 to 1994 he was a member of the Science Council . In addition, Röpke was a member of the Scientific Council of the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg from 1991 to 1994 and deputy director of the Bogoljubov Laboratory for Theoretical Physics of the United Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna from 1994 to 1997 .
