Werner Ebeling (born September 15, 1936 in Bad Suderode ) is a German theoretical physicist and professor emeritus at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

life and work

Werner Ebeling was born in Bad Suderode in the Harz region. His father Otto Ebeling was a poultry farmer as well as the founder and manager of a herd book breeding business, his mother Gisela Ebeling , nee. Brandt , was a tailor and manager in the family business. Werner Ebeling first attended in his birthplace of 1942-1950 the school and then high school ( GutsMuths-Gymnasium ) in Quedlinburg , where he received a solid science education and in 1954 the School acquired.

Ebeling studied physics at the University of Rostock from 1954 to 1959 . His academic teachers included Paul Kunze ( experimental physics ) and Hans Falkenhagen ( theoretical physics ), who also supervised his thesis on the topic: "Statistical theory of the molecular order - molecular distribution functions according to Bogoljubow." In 1959 he graduated as a physicist ; The examiners were Professors Hans Falkenhagen and Gerhard Becherer .

From 1959 to 1969 he was a research assistant in physics at Rostock University. From 1960 to 1961 he completed postgraduate studies at the Lomonosov University in Moscow in the academic school of NN Bogolyubov with lecturer Yuri L. Klimontovich . This resulted in his first publication in 1962 together with Professor Klimontovich.

In 1963 he received his doctorate from the University of Rostock with a thesis on the kinetic theory of weakly ionized plasmas and electrolytic solutions . In 1968 he completed his habilitation with the thesis on the statistical theory of bonding states in plasmas and electrolytes. Ebeling is a student of Yuri Klimontovich and the Rostock theorist Hans Falkenhagen (member of the Leopoldina and the AdW of the GDR ). He also contributed to Falkenhagen's last monograph Theory of Electrolytes (1971).

In 1969 Ebeling was appointed university lecturer in the physics section of the University of Rostock, and in 1970 he was appointed full professor for theoretical physics at the University of Rostock. In 1977 he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW).

In 1979 Ebeling was appointed full professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin (HUB) to the chair for statistical physics , which he held until he retired in 2001. From 1986 to 1990 he was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and a member of the Senate of the HUB. In 1989 he was elected as a full member of the AdW.

In the course of German reunification , he became the first freely elected President of the HUB Council in 1990 . In 1990 he also became chairman of the statutes commission at the HUB.

In 1991 and 1992 he worked as visiting professor at Hermann Haken's chair in Stuttgart, at Ilya Prigogine's chair at the University of Brussels and at Gert Eilenberger's chair at Forschungszentrum Jülich . From 1993 until his retirement in 2001 he was entrusted with the management of the chair “Statistical Physics and Nonlinear Dynamics” and took up a professorship for theoretical physics a. G. (as a guest) at the HUB. In the period from 1998 to 2000 Ebeling founded and headed the first large special research area of the German Research Foundation (DFG) “Complex Nonlinear Processes” (SFB 555) in which all Berlin and Potsdam universities and other institutes were involved.

Werner Ebeling has been with Barbara Ebeling , geb. Kürschner , married, who worked as a chief engineer . The couple has two children, Thomas Hüsing , b. Ebeling , library scientist and programmer and Dagmar Hildebrandt , geb. Ebeling , who holds a PhD in chemistry and works as a project manager at the Technical Monitoring Association (TÜV) . The Ebeling couple live in Berlin and near Rostock .
