Gerhard Reumont , occasionally Gérard Reumont , (born April 19, 1765 in Aachen , † August 27, 1828 ibid) was a German physician and spa doctor .

Life and work

Gerhard Reumont was born as the second son of Lambert Reumont. The family who immigrated to Aachen in the 18th century originally came from the Hesbaye in Belgium . His uncle, Richard Reumont, was a long-time tenant of the casino on Komphausbadstrasse.

Before studying, Gerhard Reumont worked as an apprentice in a pharmacy in Recklinghausen and Cologne . From 1787 first studied medicine at the University of Bonn . With the help of a letter of recommendation from Eulogius Schneider to Maximilien de Robespierre and his Bonn professor Joseph Claudius Rougemont, Reumont was able to study at the Paris Sorbonne from 1791 , where he also served as an assistant doctor and finally moved to Edinburgh University when the war broke out in 1792 , where he was a student of William Cullen . Even before completing his studies, he was elected to the Medical and Scientific Society of Edinburgh. Here Reumont was able to successfully complete this study in 1793 with his dissertation , De ascite abdominali . On December 31, 1793 he returned to Aachen to settle down as a licensed doctor in his hometown.

For the next few years Reumont worked there as an ordinator at the Marian Civic Hospital ; later he moved to the Elisabeth Hospital in the same position .

From 1795 Reumont was a member of the London Medical Society.

In the spring of 1800, he undertook a study trip to London to Edward Jenner to him in 1796, developed under whose guidance smallpox vaccination ( vaccination to learn). On his return trip he carried out vaccinations in Dover and several cities in the north of France . On the occasion of his stay in Paris , he was invited to give lectures on the new type of pension at the Institut National de Paris . In addition to several high-ranking officers, u. a. On April 17, 1801, Reumont introduced the smallpox vaccination in Aachen and the surrounding area. For his services to the fight against smallpox, Reumont received a special medal from Napoléon Bonaparte . By 1812, more than 10,000 children were vaccinated annually in the Département de la Roer . Reservations about the vaccinations existed almost without exception among Roman Catholic residents, so that epidemics repeatedly occurred despite the free vaccination campaigns . Reumont was able to manage numerous Aachen doctors, such as Johann Wilhelm Bardenheuer, Georg von Sartorius the Elder. J., Kaspar Ludwig Dorschel, Mathias Solders , Johann Peter Schmitz u. a. convince of the benefits of the vaccination, so that numerous doctors supported him with the vaccinations. In 1805 he was appointed epidemic doctor in the Arrondissement of Aachen.

During Empress Joséphine's spa stay in Aachen in 1804 , Reumont was her spa doctor and medical advisor. In 1805, at Napoleon's instigation, he was appointed Médecin inspecteur des eaux thermales d'Aix-la-Chapelle (bathing inspector of Aachen) and as such he also became a member of the medical jury of the Département de la Roer .

After the wars of liberation were over , Reumont was also honored by the Prussian government: in 1816 King Friedrich Wilhelm III. him the title of Medical Councilor .

family

Gerhard Reumont, son of Lambert Reumont (1739–1811) from Spa , owner of a boiler foundry and councilor in Aachen, and Ottilie Hamacher (1737–1790), was married to Lambertine Kraussen (1786–1850) since 1807. With her he had two sons, the historian and diplomat Alfred von Reumont (1808-1887) and the Prussian medical councilor Alexander Reumont (1817-1887). From the latter came Gerhard's grandson and district administrator in the Erkelenz district, Alfred von Reumont, and his son and colonel in the high command of the Wehrmacht, Alfred von Reumont .
