Gerhard Zecha (2011)

Gerhard Zecha (born July 2, 1942 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian university professor of philosophy .

education and study

After attending primary schools in Imst and Innsbruck, he switched to the Humanist Federal High School and then to the Federal Teachers' Training College in Innsbruck, where he passed his Abitur in 1962. This was followed by a three-year activity as a teacher and headmaster at the two-class elementary school in Dorf bei Längenfeld in the Ötztal . After passing the teaching qualification test for teaching at elementary schools (1964), Zecha became a teacher at the Pradl II secondary school in Innsbruck.

Here Zecha began studying educational science, philosophy and psychology at the University of Innsbruck , which he continued from 1966 at the University of Salzburg. The doctorate to Dr. phil. took place in 1968 at the University of Salzburg . His doctoral supervisor was Karl Wolf and the dissertation was titled “Contributions of recent Austrian university educators to educational science”.

Gerhard Zecha is married to the doctor Walburg Zecha, geb. Weingartner . The couple have three daughters and two sons.

academic career

In 1968 Zecha first worked as Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Portland , USA, at the Salzburg branch of this university. From 1969 to 1971 there was a scholarship at the International Research Center for Fundamentals of Science (IFZ) at the University of Salzburg. As an Alexander von Humboldt fellow , Zecha worked at the University of Konstanz from 1975–1976 . There he worked out his postdoctoral thesis on "Philosophical Foundations of educational values and goals problems" involved in the Arts Faculty of the University of Salzburg for Habilitation led. In 1977 Zecha was appointed university lecturer. In 1980 Zecha was appointed associate professor in the Philosophy Department at the Faculty of Culture and Social Sciences at the University of Salzburg. In addition, between 1984 and 2008 he headed the “Philosophy of Science of the Humanities” department at the Institute for Philosophy of Science at the International Research Center for Basic Questions in the Sciences in Salzburg . In 1997, Zecha became a university professor in the philosophy department of the Faculty of Culture and Social Sciences. From 1999 to 2001 he was the director of the philosophy department. Between 1984 and 2003 he was also chairman of the Philosophical Society in Salzburg.

A large number of guest lectures and visiting professorships led Zecha 1980–1981 to the University of Friborg in Switzerland; 1984, 1993 and 1996 at the University of South Africa, Pretoria in South Africa ; 1987–1988 at the University of California at Irvine in the USA ; 1989, 1992, 1996 and 2000 at the Center Universitaire de Luxembourg ; 1993 at the University of the Orange Free State in Bloemfontein in South Africa; 1996 to the University of Potchefstroom for Christian Higher Education in South Africa; 2001 and 2004 at the University of Stellenbosch ; 2006 at the University of Banska Bystrica in Slovakia ; 2010, 2018 at Jilin University in Changchun in China and in 2014 at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University , Minnesota , USA.

Gerhard Zecha has been retired since 2007, but in addition to his national and international guest lectures, he continues to work for the University of Salzburg and the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University, Minnesota, USA.

The focal points of Zecha relate to value philosophy , social philosophy , philosophy of science to the social sciences and humanities, philosophy of education and philosophy teaching . In his range of courses he has repeatedly addressed the students at the Institute for Educational Sciences. His well-founded, critical and at the same time constructive analyzes are based on a solid foundation of epistemological positions in the wake of Karl Popper and the skillful use of the instrument of logic in the field of norms and values.
