Gerhard Theodor Alexander Graf von Kanitz (born April 9, 1885 in Podangen , East Prussia ; † June 15, 1949 in Frankfurt-Sossenheim ) was a German landowner and politician ( DNVP , non-party, DVP ).

Life and work

Kanitz was a son of the East Prussian manor owner and longstanding conservative member of the Reichstag, Hans Graf von Kanitz . After attending the Wilhelm Gymnasium in Königsberg , he completed military training and since 1904 was an officer in the Prussian army in the cuirassier regiment "Graf Wrangel" (East Prussian) No. 3 . In 1913, after the death of his father, he took over the management of the Podangen manor in the former Prussian Holland district in East Prussia. After participating in the First World War , he acted as chairman of the agricultural association in the Prussian Holland district . In addition, he was a member of the Provisional Reich Economic Council .

Kanitz had been married to Valeska Freiin von Tiele-Winckler (1893-1949) since 1912 , with whom he had three daughters.

Political party

Kanitz joined the DNVP after the November Revolution , which he left in 1923. He later switched to DVP .

MP

Kanitz was from 1919 to 1921 for the DNVP member of the constituent Prussian state assembly . On March 7, 1921, he was re-elected to the German Reichstag , to which he belonged until May 1924, most recently as a non-attached member . In parliament he represented the constituency of East Prussia . From 1928 to 1932 he was a member of the Prussian state parliament for the DVP . From 1929 to 1933 he was a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of East Prussia .

Public offices

Kanitz served as Reich Minister for Food and Agriculture from October 6, 1923 to January 19, 1926, without belonging to any party, in the governments led by Chancellors Gustav Stresemann , Wilhelm Marx and Hans Luther .
