Giovanni Castiglione (born January 31, 1742 in Isola di Castro , Papal States , † January 9, 1815 in Osimo ) was an Italian clergyman, bishop of Osimo and cardinal .

Life

He came from the noble Castiglioni family from Milan, which also included Pope Celestine IV and the Cardinals Branda Castiglione , Giovanni Castiglione and Francesco Abbondio Castiglioni . After studying law and theology in Rome, he became a member of the Sapienza Theological Academy . On January 25, 1781 Giovanni Castiglione joined the Curia as a trainee lawyer . Pope Pius VI first appointed him President of the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe , later Secretary of the Congregation for the Administration of Goods, then Examinator of the Bishops in Canon Law and finally Head of the Hospice Santo Spirito in Sassia , which he did until he was promoted to the Cardinalate stayed. He was also a canonist of the Apostolic Penitentiary . After the first restoration of papal rule over Rome, Pope Pius VII appointed him a member of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs on July 28, 1800, where he was entrusted with the legal review of the Concordat with France of 1801 .

Pope Pius VII created Giovanni Castiglione in the consistory of February 23, 1801 as cardinal in pectore , this was publicly proclaimed on the occasion of the consistory of January 17, 1803. The red hat and the title deaconry Santa Maria in Domnica were awarded to him on March 28, 1803. A few days earlier he had been appointed protector of the Sapienza Theological Academy . Giovanni Castiglione was a member of the Council Congregation , the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars , the Index Congregation , the Congregation for the Administration of Goods and the Congregation of Rites . As a pro-penitentiary he represented Cardinal Leonardo Antonelli from November 2, 1804 to May 16, 1805 during his trip to Paris for the coronation of Napoleon I.

On January 11, 1808 Giovanni Castiglione was appointed bishop of Osimo e Cingoli. He was ordained bishop on January 31 of the same year by Cardinal Carlo Crivelli ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Giuseppe Morozzo , Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars, and Bishop Giuseppe Graziosi , Auxiliary Bishop in Palestrina . Giovanni Castiglione is one of the few diocesan bishops who belonged to the cardinal class of cardinal deacons .

He was buried in Osimo Cathedral .
