text

In the song, the singer asks the Lord to give him five different things: love , peace on earth   , light , life, and hope . The request to give life is followed by the following request: "Keep me free from birth." (“Keep me free from [re] birth.”) “[…] That is, prevent returning to this world after one has left it.” “It belongs to his Hindu belief in rebirth, in which one is continuously reborn has to be until one is spiritually perfect, a point at which one no longer has to return to the material world to learn. "" [...] and the 'freedom from rebirth' he longs for would be such an exemplary life and the successful transition to a higher reality. "

The request to give hope is followed by the following request: “Help me cope with this heavy load trying to touch and reach you with heart and soul.” ("Help me cope with this heavy burden of trying to touch and reach you with heart and soul.") Harrison's manuscript reads "heavy load" instead of "wordly role", what rather rhymes with “soul”.

“It's a musically beautiful and lyrically simple prayer both for the idealistic dreams of the 1960s - peace and love - as well as for George's religious ambitions - divine light and freedom from reincarnation. Both times, after the main two verses, we hear ' OM '. "
