The smooth tree sling ( Periploca laevigata ) (Spanish common name Cornicabra or Cornical ) is a species of tree sling ( Periploca ) from the subfamily Periplocoideae , which is part of the dog poison family . This species is endemic to the Canaries , Ilhas Selvagens and Cape Verde .

features

The smooth tree loop is a shrub with twisting, brown twigs that can grow to heights of up to 2 meters. The leaves are lanceolate to obovate, taper towards the base in a short stem and have a leathery consistency.

The flowers sit in small panicle-like inflorescences in the upper part of the shrub in the leaf axils . The hermaphrodite flowers are about 1 to 2 cm in diameter. The petals are elongated and rounded at the end. They have a yellowish green edge, inside they are brown, z. Sometimes with a few white spots. The secondary crown has five curved appendages.

The paired follicles that are fused at the base are up to 15 cm long and 1 cm in diameter. The two fruits look like horns; hence the Spanish name Cornicabra = goat horn.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

The smooth tree loop occurs on all Canary Islands and on the Ilhas Selvagens in the succulent bush of the drier areas of the islands. In Cape Verde, it populates the islands of Santo Antão , Santa Luzia , São Nicolau , Santiago , Fogo and Brava .

Systematics

The first description by William Aiton was published in 1789.

The populations of the Cape Verde Islands are partially separated as a separate species ( Periploca chevalieri Browicz ) or subspecies ( Periploca laevigata subsp. Chevalieri (Browicz) G. Kunkel ), but this separation is rejected in the monograph by Venter (1997).
