Layout and function

Stair tower of the town hall Höxter with the carillon in the lantern

The carillon in the historic Höxter town hall consists of 35 bells that are hung in a steel frame in the tower lantern of the town hall's stair tower . The gaming table is on the last floor of the tower staircase. The bells are operated by electromagnetically operated hammers. The electromagnets are controlled from the gaming table via a cable connection. This is also the difference to a classic carillon , which requires a mechanical connection by means of tension wires from the gaming table to the clappers and hammer hammers of the bells.

history

The idea of installing a carillon came from Chief Justice Inspector Josef Michels, member of the advisory board of the Hoffmann von Fallersleben Society. He wanted the carillon out of gratitude for the poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben and to keep the memory of him alive. He asked Höxteraner citizens and associations, the city council, the regional association Westphalia-Lippe as well as the ministries in Düsseldorf and Bonn to help realize his plan. After three years of intensive preparatory work, the acquisition and installation costs of 34,000  DM were raised and the carillon was inaugurated on May 1, 1959. It is one of the oldest permanently installed carillons in Germany.

At the beginning of 2010 it was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Höxter and on this occasion in February 2010 the LWL monument preservation, landscape and building culture in Westphalia awarded it directly as Monument of the Month in Westphalia-Lippe .

Bells

The bronze bells were cast by the Rincker bell and art foundry in Sinn (Dillkreis) . The total weight of the bells is 1,680 kg.

Game mechanism

The console and the control of the glockenspiel were built by Eduard Korfhage & Sons . The carillon can be played directly by one player using two manuals . There is also a mechanism in the gaming table that can be used to automatically play pieces previously recorded on a punched tape.

game schedule

There were very different ideas about which songs should be included in the program. Essentially, the Hoffmann von Fallersleben Society, which insisted on Hoffmann's songs, prevailed. Only the morning play begins with a chorale and an evening song sounds at 8:55 p.m. The songs were recorded by the director of studies, KH Behre, a music teacher at the König-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Höxter.
