Politics and world events

Roman Empire

Pannonian uprising
  • The Pannonian uprising is put down by Tiberius Julius Caesar . Pannonia gets the status of a Roman province.
  • The Roman Senate adopts the lex Papia Poppaea , which stipulates that all Roman citizens must be married. Unmarried persons lose the right to inheritance.
  • September: Varus Battle (also battle in the Teutoburg Forest ). Legate Publius Quinctilius Varus , the governor of Germania magna , moves with three legions and auxiliary troops of the Cherusci under Arminius back to the winter camp Vetera (near Xanten ) west of the Rhine. The news of a regional uprising by the Teutons causes Varus to take a detour to the north. Arminius and the Cherusci separate from the Romans, ostensibly to gather allies.
    • Day 1: The Roman legions bypass the Wiehen Mountains to the north . Germanic fighters attack the remaining winter garrisons.
    • Day 2: When the Romans leave a dense forest area, they are attacked by the allied Cheruscans , Marsers , Chatten , Brukterians , Chauken and others under the leadership of Arminius. Due to the confusing terrain and without their usual battle formation, numerous legionaries fell victim to the Teutons. The legions push back into the forest, but are pursued by the Germanic warriors.
    • Day 3: In order to shake off the Teutons and reach safe territory, the Romans march westwards under Varus for the whole day and the following night.
    • Day 4: The decimated Roman legions reach an area north of the Kalkrieser Berg (east of today's Bramsche ). The Germans built walls here to stop the Romans. Wedged between mountains and swamps, the Romans cannot get into their battle formation. An attempt to storm the wall fails. The Germanic peoples pursue the surviving legionaries into the open field. The legions XVII Augusta , XVIII Augusta and XIX Augusta with a total of around 20,000 men are almost completely lost. The legates Publius Quinctilius Varus and Numonius Vala and most of the officers lose their lives. The survivors under Prefect Ceionus surrender. The so-called Varus Battle means one of the greatest defeats of the Roman Empire.
  • The legions II Augusta , XX Valeria Victrix and XIII Gemina are relocated to Germania.

Europe

  • Conquest of Camulodunum (today Colchester) by the Catuvellauni at the expense of Trinovante. Cunobelinus becomes king of the Celtic Catuvellaunen , who settled on the British Isles.

Empire of China

Family table Wang Mang
  • Wang Mang , incumbent emperor for the childlike Crown Prince Ying Ruzi, ascends the throne himself and appoints himself as the new emperor of China. This ended the era of the western Han dynasty . Instead, Wang Mang established the short-lived Xin dynasty . Wang Mang eliminates private land ownership, state regulation of prices, coinage and tax reform. Ban on the slave trade by imperial decree.
