Roman Empire
Augustan German Wars
- Germanicus , commander in chief of the Roman troops in Germania , leads a large-scale campaign in the area on the right bank of the Rhine. Mattium , the main town of Chatti , in the area of today's Schwalm-Eder district , is destroyed.
- May: Segestes , King of the Cherusci , openly opposes Arminius , under whom the Teutons defeated the Romans five years earlier. Arminius lives in a kidnapping marriage with Segestes' daughter Thusnelda , who is pregnant by him. Segestes is now besieged by his own tribesmen. The Roman army under Germanicus appears and can free the king. Segestes hands his pregnant daughter over to the Romans as a prisoner.
- Lucius Stertinius leads a division of the Roman army against the Brukterer , who settle between the Ems and Lippe . In the course of the fighting, the Romans also find the standard of Legion XVIIII, which went down in the Varus Battle .
- Late summer: The Roman army under Germanicus reaches the scene of the Varus Battle of 9 AD and buries the dead who have remained untouched here for six years. Not far from this place, Arminius lures the Roman cavalry into the trap and largely eliminates them. Germanicus decides to withdraw from Germania magna immediately. However, Aulus Caecina Severus was ordered to repair a Roman causeway with four legions.
- When Caecina's troops reach the marshland southwest of the Ems, where they are supposed to repair the Roman causeway, they are expected by a large Germanic army under Arminius. While the Romans have to camp in the swampy lowlands, the Teutons are on the surrounding hills. In the battle of the Pontes longi , the Germans waged grueling battles against the Romans for several days, who at the same time tried to build dams in the marshland to improve their fighting position. Only the hasty attack by Arminius' uncle Inguiomer prevents the complete annihilation of the Roman legions. Still, few soldiers, including Caecina herself, escape to Vetera . 10,000 to 15,000 Romans are killed.
