Gonatostylis is a genus from the family of the orchid (Orchidaceae). It consists of only two species found on New Caledonia and Alofi .

description

The two species of the genus Gonatostylis grow as perennial herbaceous plants . They form a creeping rhizome , the roots are thick and hairy. The ascending stem axes carry the leaves in a basal rosette. The leaves are green or brownish with darker markings. The elongated to lanceolate leaf blade merges into a short, wide petiole, the tubular leaf bases encompass the stem axis and hide it completely.

The inflorescence axis of the terminal racemose inflorescence is hairy glandular. There are six to nine bracts on it , with numerous small flowers further up . The bracts are slightly longer than the ovary , both are also hairy glandular. The ovary is twisted and the flowers resupined accordingly . The bracts barely open, the three sepals encompass the inner bracts. The lateral petals are asymmetrically elongated or obverse-lanceolate, they adhere to the upper petal. The lip is fleshy, bulged at the base, internally provided with two longitudinally extending strips and fleshy various appendages on the outside warzig- papillate . The column is narrow, with a 90 ° bend in the middle. The stamen is round to bean-shaped, it contains two pollinia that sit directly on the adhesive disc (Viscidium). The scar consists of two interconnected surfaces and is concave. The separating tissue between the stigma and the stamen (rostellum) is slightly incised at the end.

The elongated seeds measure 0.6 to 1.3 mm.

Occurrence

Gonatostylis is mainly known from New Caledonia. While Hallé as well as Ormerod and Cribb state both species as endemic to New Caledonia, the checklist of the Kew Gardens at Gonatostylis vieillardii reports an occurrence on Alofi. However, R. Govaerts no longer mentions the species from there. Gonatostylis can be found at altitudes of 100 to 1400 meters. They grow in rainforest , savannah and bushland.

Systematics and botanical history

Gonatostylis is classified within the tribe Cranichideae in the subtribe Goodyerinae . According to Dressler, this can be further divided into two groups; Gonatostylis is in the larger group, the scar of which is not divided into two parts. Danhatchia australis from New Zealand is closely related , and some Goodyera species also show similarities.

The first description was Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach in 1876 under the name Rhamphidia vieillardii . The genus Gonatostylis was established by Rudolf Schlechter in 1906 . The generic name is made up of the Greek words γωνία gonia for "angle" and στήλη stylos for "column"; it refers to the angled column. The type species is Gonatostylis vieillardii . Nicolas Hallé described the second species, Gonatostylis bougainvillei , in 1977 .

species

use

Both species are occasionally cultivated in New Caledonia. In humus, well drained substrate in a shady location, the culture is estimated to be relatively easy.
