Gottfried Pfeifer

Gottfried Georg Pfeifer (born January 20, 1901 in Berlin ; † July 6, 1985 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German geographer and university professor .

Life

Gottfried Pfeifer, the son of grammar school professor Wilhelm Pfeifer and his wife Margarete née Haseloff, passed his Abitur in his hometown of Berlin in 1920 . He then turned to studying geography at the Universities of Marburg , Munich and Kiel . During his studies in Marburg he became a member of the Academic-Musical Association Fridericiana . In 1927, in Kiel his promotion to Dr. phil. with Leo Waibel . In the same year he took up a position as a research assistant at the Geographical Institute of the University of Kiel. In the following year, Gottfried Pfeifer moved to California on a scholarship from the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Foundation , where he took on a position in 1930 as an assistant professor to Carl O. Sauer at the University of Berkeley .

After his return to Germany in 1932 he was employed as a senior assistant at the Geographical Institute of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he received the Venia Legendi for geography in 1934 , and in 1941 he was promoted to extraordinary professor. In addition, he was deputy professor at the universities of Leipzig and Göttingen . After the end of the war , Gottfried Pfeifer moved to the Department of Regional Studies in Scheinfeld as a research assistant . In 1947 he followed a call to the full professorship of geography and the direction of the Economic Geography Institute at the University of Hamburg . In 1949 Pfeifer went to Heidelberg , where he was given the full professorship in geography and head of the Institute of Geography, and in 1969 he retired .

Pfeifer, who undertook research trips to the USA and Latin America (1928 to 1930 and 1966 to Mexico , 1950, 1956, 1962 and 1965 to Brazil as well as 1959), emerged as the author of highly regarded essays on all areas of human geography . Gottfried Pfeifer was accepted as a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , the Geographical Society Munich and the American Geographical Society.

Gottfried Pfeifer, who married Hermann, born in 1929 to Ruth, with whom he had four children named Hans, Eva, Dieter and Gerda, died in 1985 at the age of 84 in Freiburg im Breisgau.
