James O'Brien

James O'Brien (born March 13, 1841 in County Kings , Ireland , † March 5, 1907 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1881 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James O'Brien was born and raised in King's County during the Victorian Age . He attended community schools. In 1861 he immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City. In the same year the civil war broke out. O'Brien was Alderman in New York City in 1864 and 1866 . In 1867 he served as sheriff in the City and County of New York . He sat in the New York Senate in 1872 and 1873 . He ran unsuccessfully for New York City Mayor last year and for a seat in the 44th Congress the following year . As an independent Democrat , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 1878 congressional elections for the 46th Congress in the tenth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Abram Hewitt on March 4, 1879 . In 1880 he was defeated in his re-election bid and was eliminated from the after March 3, 1881 Congress of. After that he was to (his death as a broker broker involved).
