Andritz is the 12th and largest urban district in Graz . It is located in the north of Graz and consists of the old villages Oberandritz, Unterandritz and St. Veit as well as the scattered settlement Neustift.

history

The area of today's Andritz district was settled in Roman times. A cemetery from late Roman times was in Weinzödl. The name Andritz was first mentioned in 1265 as "Endritz". The place name comes from Slavic ( jendrica = "fast flowing water"). Many settlement and field names here are of Slavic origin: Gabriach (from Gabraw ) old name for St. Veit, Weinitzen (from vinica ); Zapuden, Schuritz, Glim and Rannach.

The old farming villages changed their characteristics when Josef Körösi established an iron foundry and a machine factory in 1852 (Maschinenfabrik Andritz AG, today Andritz AG ). The Kranz paper factory followed in 1913, emerging from a paper mill that had existed since 1790. This was taken over in 1939 by the industrial family Arland and lasted until 1990.

Andritz also became an independent municipality in 1850, but came to Graz in 1938 together with St. Veit and the southern part of Weinitzen . With the incorporation, a new name was also introduced ( Graz Nord ). In 1946, the current district boundaries and today's name Andritz were determined by a municipal council resolution .

Andritzer Maut (Maut Andritz) still refers to a tram stop at the northern end of Grabenstrasse and Körösistrasse where, before 1938, pavement tolls for vehicles entering the city and a tax for numerous goods were collected.

geography

Andritz lies on one side on the left bank of the Mur , which forms the border with the neighboring district of Gösting . The northern district boundary or the city boundary runs through the southern part of the Grazer Bergland . The highest elevation in the district is the Lineckberg , which is also the highest elevation in the city on the left bank of the Mur. Other well-known hills are the Admonter Kogel and the Reinerkogel .

The Andritzbach flows through Andritz into the Mur. It rises in the neighboring community of Stattegg . The source of Andritz origin located there is often incorrectly named as its source because of its name.

Around 1976/1977 the (upper left) mill passage was filled in and for a long time it was diverted from a weir above the old Weinzödl bridge through Andritz and up to the Schlossberg. In 1982 the new Mur power plant in Weinzödl on the northern edge of Graz went into operation. After flood damage in the district, provisions for large floods were built around 2015/2018 by means of retention basins and brook cross-section enlargements.

The Riel pond (also spelled Rielteich) and the adjacent meadow areas on Stattegger Strasse are nature reserves. The protection is based on the fact that the animals found in the pond are unique in their diversity, 49 species of dragonflies alone have been found. The nature reserve is 11,734 m².

The Andritz-Weinzödl climbing garden is located on the west wall of a southern branch of the Kanzelkogel . Currently (as of March 2020) blocked by the Alpine Club supervisor due to the risk of falling rocks.
