Great Lakes Airlines , officially Great Lakes Aviation , was an American airline based in Cheyenne , Wyoming , which operated scheduled services and charter flights . Its headquarters were at Cheyenne Regional Airport , with a hub in Denver, Colorado, aircraft bases in Kansas City, Missouri, Phoenix, Arizona and St. Louis, Missouri. The main destinations were Albuquerque (New Mexico) and Milwaukee (Wisconsin).

history

The airline was founded in 1977 by Doug Voss and Ivan Simpson and began operating on April 5, 1977. The service began October 12, 1981 between Spencer , Iowa and Des Moines , Iowa. In 1988, Great Lakes acquired Alliance Airlines with a route network around Lake Michigan.

In the following years the route network was continuously expanded and in 1992 a code share agreement with United Airlines followed . In 1994 the airline was registered as a stock corporation in the NASDAQ . From October 1995 to 1997 the company flew under the colors of Midway Connection . The cooperation was then downgraded to a code share agreement and as of May 21, 2001 the airline was again independent.

The State of Wyoming supported Great Lakes to a great extent, as the airline was the only one to fly to six of the ten business airports in Wyoming. Great Lakes eventually took over the routes from seven Montana airports to Billings from Big Sky Airlines . These routes are subsidized by the state as part of the Essential Air Service program.

The airline ceased operations on March 18, 2018. In April 2020, Alpine Air Express took over the airline's aircraft and assets.
