Marek Michał Grechuta (born December 10, 1945 in Zamość , † October 9, 2006 in Kraków ) was a Polish singer , poet , composer and painter and studied architect. He was particularly interested in sculpture and philosophy. Along with Czesław Niemen, he is the most important exponent of sung poetry , a genre that is very similar to chanson under the influence of rock, jazz-rock and progressive rock .

Life

Marek Grechuta learned to play the piano as a child and graduated from high school in Zamość, his hometown. In 1963 he studied architecture at the Cracow University of Technology . At the Kraków Faculty of Architecture he met Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz , with whom he founded the cabaret Anawa (from French en avant , forward). The cabaret later became part of the Grechutas accompanying band of the same name.

Grechuta had his first public appearance in October 1967 at the popular student festival of songs in Krakow, where he won 2nd place with his song Tango Anawa . In 1968 he won the VI. National Festival of Polish Songs (KFPP) in Opole the hearts of journalists for his song and one year later after the VII. KFPP with his new song Wesele (wedding) one of the most important awards (Nagroda TVP). With the band Anawa he recorded two of his first records: Marek Grechuta & Anawa (1970) and Korowód (1971). At the IX. KFPP 1971 in Opole Grechuta then received his main prize with his song Korowód ( Parade ). Together with the band Anawa and especially the title , which Kurt Demmler translated into German, Important are days that are unknown , he also became known in the GDR and toured the country there.

1972 Grechuta left the band Anawa and founded a new one called WIEM ("I know" or short for W Innej Epoce Muzycznej ). With this band he produced two albums: Droga za widnokres (1972) and Magia obłoków (1974). These records were full of elements from jazz, rock and texts by contemporary poets such as Tadeusz Nowak , Tadeusz Śliwiak and Mieczysław Jastrun .

In 1976 he started a ten-year collaboration with the Krakow cabaret cellar Piwnica pod Baranami and began setting many texts by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz to music . At the XI. KFPP Opole won the Grand Prix with his song Hop - szklankę piwa , at which Krystyna Janda also performed the song Guma do żucia composed by him . Grechuta also co-wrote the musical Szalona lokomotywa (Crazy Locomotive), for which Witkiewicz wrote the libretto, with Krzysztof Jasiński and Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz . The musical ran 1977-1980 on Krakowski Teatr Scena STU and Spodek of Katowice .

In 1979 Grechuta recorded a record with newly composed songs to poems by Tadeusz Nowak, in which he sang about Teresa Iwaniszewska-Haremza, Magda Umer and Marian Opania . These works, originally from the play Zapach łamanego chleba (The Smell of Broken Bread), were loved by the audience. In 1981 his album Śpiewające obrazy (Singing Pictures) was released, which he recorded again with the band Anawa, inspired by paintings by famous artists such as van Gogh , Picasso , Edgar Degas , Claude Monet , Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Stanisław Wyspiański, as well as from the play Othello .

In 1984 Marek Grechuta and Krystyna Janda recorded a record based on poems by Bolesław Leśmian (1877–1937). Then two years later came the album Wiosna - ach to ty (spring, oh that's you) with its own lyrics . Filled with light music, the album also contained fragments of the music for the plays Colas Breugonon , Tumor Witkacego and Kroniki Olsztyńskiej . In 1987 he wrote the music for the theater performances of Jan Brzechwas Kopciuszek (Cinderella). In 1989 he released the LP Krajobraz pełen nadziei (Landscape Full of Hope). In 1990 his Złote Przeboje live concert took place at the Krakowski Teatr Scena STU . In 1991 he brought out children's songs together with the actors of the Old Theater Kraków and the Gama Children 's Choir .

In 1994 Grechuta released his album Dziesięć ważnych słów (Ten Important Words), which he dedicates to the most important basic values ​​in life. He alludes to the Decalogue and names ten commandments of modern man. In 2003 the rock band Myslovitz released the best of CD , which contains the hit Kraków with Marek Grechuta.

Grechuta's last album Niezwykłe miejsca (Unusual Places) was released in 2004. He dedicated it to places that particularly fascinated him in life. Shortly before his death in 2006, Grechuta was once again awarded the Grand Prix by the President of the TVP at the KFPP Opole.

Marek was married to his wife Danuta Grechuta from 1967 and was father of a son. He died at the age of 60 on October 9, 2006 in Krakow. Thousands said goodbye on October 17, 2006 at his funeral on Aleja Zasłużonych (Avenue of the Deserved) of the Rakowicki Cemetery .

Aftermath

There are now some artists who have taken up and interpreted Grechuta's musical legacy in different ways. Karol Namysłowski recorded a symphony with the Zamość Philharmonic Orchestra with a medley of Grechuta's best-known titles in the classical style.
