Greg Abate (born May 31, 1947 in Fall River , Massachusetts ) is an American jazz musician ( saxophone , flute ), arranger , music teacher and composer .

Life

Abate grew up in Woonsocket (Rhode Island) ; in high school he learned the clarinet . He then studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and then lived for a few years in California before returning to Berklee in 1972 to complete his education. He then worked in the bands of Ray Charles (1973/74 as the successor to David Fathead Newman ), from 1978 with his own band Channel One and from 1985 to 1987 in the Artie Shaw Orchestra under the direction of Dick Johnson ; he also took part in the recordings of Herb Pomeroy and Claudio Roditi . He lives in Rhode Island and occurs mainly on the east coast of the USA , but also in Europe. Since the early 1990s, he has released a number of albums under his own name on the labels Seaside, Candid and Blue Chip Jazz. Abate, who plays in the bebop and hardbop tradition, counts Charlie Parker , Paul Desmond and Phil Woods among his main influences.

Abate is an Adjunct Instructor of Jazz at Rhode Island College . He teaches jazz improvisation and jazz theory, but also supervises jazz combos. He leads workshops, clinics and master classes in the US and worldwide .

reception

Howard Reich, music critic at the Chicago Tribune, admits Abate's work with a feeling of constant invention and creativity , while Jim Merod, New Jazz Recordings, calls him one of the most appealing saxophonists on the jazz scene today. Chris Robinson describes him on conn-selmer.com as one of the best post- bebop alto saxophonists today and admits the title Prince of Bebop .
