Greek group formation at the 2012 Olympics

The Greek selection of rhythmic gymnastics is the name given to the best Greek gymnasts who represent Greece both in individual competitions and in group competitions at international tournaments. The group formation is usually called the national rhythmic gymnastics team .

structure

In rhythmic gymnastics , individual gymnasts from a nation are referred to as a team in an international competition . The group gymnasts as a group .

Individual competition

In the individual gymnastics, there are competitions in four disciplines, known as the individual all-around ( English Individual All - Around ). The best eight in each discipline qualify for the for the separately discharged apparatus finals ( english Apparatus Finals ). In addition, there is a title in the team all-around competition of the individual gymnasts ( English Individual Team ), so up to six medals can be won. At the Olympic Games only one medal is awarded for the individual all-round competition.

Group competition

A group formation consists of five gymnasts and one substitute gymnast. Titles are awarded in the all around competition ( English Group All - Around ) as well as in the disciplines 5x (all five gymnasts with the same hand device) and 3x + 2x (with two different hand devices) also called device finals . The hand-held devices are set in advance of a tournament and apply to all participating athletes. At the Olympic Games, only the group all-around competition is played.

RSG in Greece

The rhythmic gymnastics is organized by the Greek Gymnastics Association ( Greek Ελληνική Γυμναστική Ομοσπονδία ). Although this gymnastics sport in Greece already inspired fans in the 1960s, the first Panhellenic championships did not take place until 1980.

Individual gymnasts

In 1984 the gymnasts Avdia Argiraki, Danai Nonta and Maria Alevizou presented the Greek selection for the first time at the international level at the fourth European Championships of Rhythmic Gymnastics in Vienna . Three years later, at the World Championships in Varna , the athletes Maria Alevizou and Panagiota Tsitsela managed to qualify for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . In 1991 world championships were held in Greece for the first time. The Greek gymnasts Areti Sinapidou (13th place) and Maria Sansaridou (11th place) qualified for the 1992 Olympic Games thanks to their good placements . In the shadow of these events, a new talent in gymnastics grew up, Maria Pangalou, who already achieved good results in the junior division, made a lasting impression at the International Meeting of the RSG in Portimão in 1996 . She managed to take gold twice and bronze twice in the four individual disciplines. In the individual all-around, she took fourth place. She was able to confirm her good performance one year later at the 13th edition of the European Championships. Pangalou won silver in two disciplines. The Greek selection delivered their best team performance at the 2003 World Championships. The Greek gymnasts took fourth place in the team all-round competition. Above all, it was thanks to Eleni Andriola , who was able to reach the finals in two of four disciplines.

National team RSG

The juniors for the Greek selection achieved their first successes in group competitions. In 1987, the group finished sixth at the European Junior Championships . In 1989 at the World Championships in Sarajevo , the first selection also won a fifth place, which it was able to defend two years later at the following domestic World Championships. As the sport established itself over the years, it was again the junior group that won the first medals for Greece. At the European Championships in 1994, the youngsters won one gold and one bronze. Three years later, at the 1997 European Championships, the junior group (with Irini Aindili and Zacharoula Karyami, among others ) secured another gold medal. At the same championships, the first selection also received a medal for the first time and took second place in the all-around competition, just behind Russia. The Greek national team experienced its peak for the time being at the turn of the century, when it was multiple European and world champions between 1999 and 2002, as well as being third at the 2000 Games in Sydney . The group was led by 17-year-old Irini Aindili, who is considered the most successful national gymnast in Greece. A recurring sports injury forced her to quit the team and retire from her career in 2003, a year before the 2004 Athens Olympic Games .

In the first round of the competition, 14 gymnasts are eliminated, the top ten then decide the medals among themselves in the final. The best placement of a Greek individual gymnast at the Olympic Games, Evmorfia Dona got her seventh place in 2000.

The group all-around competition was not added until 1996. Since the 2008 Games , twelve national groups have been able to qualify.
