Vernayaz is a political municipality and a civil parish in the district of Saint-Maurice in the French-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland .
geography
The municipality of Vernayaz is located at the entrance to the Vallée du Trient , in Lower Valais, on the western bank of the Rhone . In the south of the municipality the Trient and in the north the Salanfe flow from the west into the Rhone. The municipality consists of the three villages Vernayaz, Miéville and Gueuroz.
history
Vernayaz parish was created in 1912 by splitting off from Salvan parish .

Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
Vernayaz is at the junction of the traffic route through the Rhone Valley with the one that leads through the Vallée du Trient to Chamonix . Since 1859 the place has been served by the Simplon line of the SBB , in 1907 the meter-gauge Martigny-Châtelard railway came .
Originally the road led into the Vallée du Trient from Vernayaz with 43 bends to Salvan, it was replaced in the 1930s by a road connection from Martigny, which leads over the famous Pont de Gueuroz .
In the 1970s, the place was connected to the A9 motorway , which runs through the Rhone Valley.
tourism
With the development of the place by the Simplon Railway, tourism arose, which on the one hand changed the means of transport for the journey through the Vallée du Trient in Vernayaz , but also looked at the Gorges du Trient and the Pissevache. Several hotels were built on site, including the Grand Hôtel des gorges du Trient.
Industry and power plants
- Vernayaz power station (SBB) for the traction power supply in western Switzerland
- Carbide factory : the company, founded in 1899, was taken over by G. Staechelin Sons & Co. in 1904 and passed to Lonza in 1924 . In the company's own power station Pissevache , later also called the Lonza power station, the electricity for the electric arc furnaces was generated.
