Guido Möllering (born January 21, 1972 in Ochtrup ) is a German economist specializing in trust research. He is director of the Reinhard Mohn Institute for Corporate Management and holds the Reinhard Mohn Endowed Chair for Corporate Management at the University of Witten / Herdecke .

Life

After graduating from high school in Ochtrup and doing community service at Castle Gemen near Münster , Möllering studied in the European Business Program. In 1996 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Portsmouth ( Great Britain ) and a degree in business administration from the University of Applied Sciences in Münster . In 1997 he received a Master of Philosophy in Management Studies at the University of Cambridge , where he also obtained his doctorate in 2003.

In 2011 Möllering completed his habilitation after research at the Max Planck Institute for Social Research in Cologne at the Free University of Berlin in business administration and received the license to teach before he was appointed professor for organization and management at Jacobs University Bremen and the "EWE Chair of Economic Organization and Trust ”. In July 2016 he moved to the University of Witten / Herdecke , where he took over the management of the Reinhard Mohn Institute for Management and the “M.Sc. Strategy & Organization ”.

Möllering deals with the importance of trust in business trends, both within organizations and between organizations. According to Möllering, trust means "despite vulnerability and uncertainty to expect others to use their freedom competently and responsibly." In his book Reason, Routine, Reflexivity , he worked on the element of faith as essential for, based on sociologists such as Georg Simmel and Anthony Giddens Trust and refer to it as the Leap of Faith , suspension or removal of uncertainty and vulnerability towards others. At the same time, he emphasizes the process-based nature of trust.

With Jörg Sydow , Möllering developed a conception of cross-company value creation based on organizational theory, known as "Production in Networks" , which links strategic, organizational and operational aspects of production , procurement and network management and is part of the current orientation of the Reinhard Mohn Institute for Management reflects.

Further research fields are international management , organizational fields and the emergence of markets .

In addition to teaching and research, Möllering is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Trust Research and senior editor and book review editor of Organization Studies , the specialist journal of the European Group for Organizational Studies . He is co-editor of the Handbook of Research Methods on Trust and advocates the further development of trust research methods.

After the financial crisis of 2008, Möllering warned in various media against "control reflexes" and against demands for transparency, which made it difficult to rebuild lost trust and the necessary acceptance of uncertainty. Instead, voluntary signals of willingness to take responsibility were propagated. Möllering's work also has an impact beyond economics , for example in a publication on the pastoral care of the diocese of Münster or in the area of consumer protection .

The Reinhard Mohn Institute, headed by Möllering, has been a cooperation partner of the competition for corporate responsibility "My good example" since 2018 and he is a member of the jury.
