Guido Sontag (General, 1821)

Guido Philipp Joseph Sontag (born October 3, 1821 in Merzig , † February 4, 1889 in Nassau ) was a Prussian major general .

Guido was a son of the district secretary Eugen Sontag († 1881) and his wife Marie, née Ruff († 1837).

Military career

After attending high school in Saarbrücken , Sontag joined the 8th Pioneer Department of the Prussian Army as a volunteer on October 24, 1839 . For further training he was commanded from October 1840 to July 1842 at the United Artillery and Engineering School and in mid-October 1842 was aggregated as a second lieutenant of the 3rd Engineer Inspection . After almost four months of service with the 2nd Pioneer Department, Sontag was aggregated to the 1st Engineer Inspection on October 2, 1843 and assigned to the 2nd Engineer Inspection on December 30, 1845. As a result, he was commanded for fortification in Thorn , Spandau and Danzig and after his promotion to Prime Lieutenant in Luxembourg . On March 10, 1853, Sontag was transferred to the 8th Pioneer Division and promoted to captain on October 23, 1855 . He then came to Minden Fortress on March 24, 1856 and to Koblenz Fortress on March 14, 1859 . From there he came on March 24th, 1865 came as an engineer officer from the square to the fortress Cosel . He was promoted to major on September 12, 1865 , and on June 17, 1867, he was transferred from the square to the Szczecin Fortress as an engineer officer. Sontag grew late March 1868 Lieutenant Colonel and received after the war against France on August 18, 1871 the character as a colonel . The patent for his rank was awarded to him on January 9, 1873. On April 12, 1873, Sontag was appointed inspector of the 7th fortress inspection in Cologne and in this position on the occasion of the festival in January 1875 with the Order of the Red Eagle III. Excellent with a bow. He was given the character of major general on May 15, 1875, and was put up for disposal with a pension .

He died in Nassau on February 4, 1889.

Sontag married Karoline Hofmann (1827–1893) on August 2, 1856 in Koblenz. The couple had several children:
