Gunter Schneider (General)

Gunter Schneider (born August 8, 1964 in Eisern near Siegen ) is a major general in the Army of the German Armed Forces and since April 1, 2019 military Vice President at the Federal Office for Personnel Management of the German Armed Forces in Cologne .

Gunter Schneider joined the Bundeswehr in 1984 with Jägerbataillon 552 in Böblingen , studied pedagogy at the University of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg from 1985 to 1989 and was then transferred as platoon leader to the Panzergrenadierbataillon 131/132 in Wetzlar . From 1992 to 1995 he was company commander of the 2nd Company of the Panzer Battalion 341 and the 5th Company of the Panzer Grenadier Battalion 342, both of which were stationed in Koblenz . He then worked for two years as an S3 officer (planning, issuing orders and managing ongoing operations) of Panzer Brigade 34 in Diez an der Lahn . From 1997 to 1999 Schneider participated in the 40th course for the general staff of the army at the Staff College in part in Hamburg.

Service as a staff officer

From 1999 to 2001 Schneider went to Diez again, where he was employed as head of the staff department for logistic support (G4). This was followed by a position in the command staff of the Army in Bonn , then as an operations officer in the Army Command in Koblenz from 2003 to 2005. As a commander, he led the Panzergrenadier Battalion 152 in Schwarzenborn until 2006, during which time he took over as commander of the German Einsatzverband in the 9th German ISAF contingent participated in the operation in Afghanistan .

Schneider then became a consultant for basic personnel matters in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn and from 2007 to 2009 there was personnel manager of the colonels with general staff training. 2009-2010 he was department head of the Office of Personnel of the Bundeswehr in Cologne and 2010-2012 Commander of Infantry Regiment 1 in Schwarzenborn, where he again at the ISAF mission in Afghanistan took part during this time (Senior Mentor 3rd Brigade, 209th  ANA - Corps, 28 . DEU  EinsKtgt  ISAF) . From November 2012 to September 2014 Schneider was the head of the Army's Combat Training Center, which was handed over to Colonel Uwe-Alexander Becker .

Service as a general

On May 9, 2014, Schneider became the successor of Brigadier General Norbert Wagner , commander of the 9th Panzer Training Brigade . On this post he was also promoted to brigadier general. On April 1, 2017, he handed over this command to Colonel Ullrich Spannuth , and on April 1, 2017, he switched to the post of Head of Department IV in the Federal Office for Personnel Management of the Bundeswehr in Cologne as the successor to Brigadier General Georg Klein . At times, as a general staff retention, he was responsible for better retention of existing staff in the Bundeswehr. Schneider gave this post to Colonel Hans-Dieter Müller on February 1, 2018 , in order to go on a foreign assignment as Deputy Chief of Staff J7 at the headquarters of the Resolute Support Mission in Kabul ( Afghanistan ). On this post he replaced Brigadier General René Leitgen . After a year abroad, he handed over this post to Brigadier General Markus Kuczyk on February 1, 2019 . On April 1, 2019, Schneider succeeded Rear Admiral Martin Krebs as military vice-president in the Federal Office for Personnel Management of the Bundeswehr in Cologne.

Private

Gunter Schneider has two children.
