The Gus ( Russian Гусь ) is a 147 km long left tributary of the Oka in the European part of Russia .
course
The Gus rises in the south of Vladimir Oblast about 20 km south-southeast of the city of Vladimir . From there it flows south and after about 15 km reaches the town of Gus-Khrustalny .
Continuing in a southerly direction, the river then flows through the densely forested and swampy Meschtschora lowlands .
Shortly before the confluence of Tikor and Dandur, it reaches the border with Ryazan Oblast . Here it turns in a south-easterly direction before it flows into the Oka at Gus-Schelesny .
The name Gus corresponds to the Russian word for goose . This folk etymological explanation of the word meaning is reflected, for example, in the coat of arms of the city of Gus-Khrustalny, which is located on the river, in which a stylized goose is depicted. Presumably the name is derived from the Finno-Ugric word kuusi for spruce ; the Meshchora Plain through which it flows, in which these and other conifers are widespread, was inhabited in historical times by a Finno-Ugric tribe, also called Meshchora by the Russians.
