Gustaf Evertsson Horn , since 1651 Baron Horn af Marienborg , ( Swedish Gustaf Evertsson Horn af Kanckas, formerly Horn af Marienborg ; born May 28, 1614 in Lemo , † February 27, 1666 in Stade ) was a Swedish field marshal .

Life

Origin and family

Gustaf was a member of the Finnish-Swedish aristocratic family Horn af Kanckas and founder of the barons Horn af Marienborg . He was the only child of the Swedish field marshal Evert Karlsson Horn (1585-1615) and Margareta, née Fincke († 1647).

Gustaf married Maria Mörner (1619–1643) in Stralsund in 1638 , his second marriage in 1644 Freiin Barbro Kurck (1658) and in their third marriage in 1661 at the Stockholm Palace Maria Silfverhielm (1634–1712). All marriages produced a total of 11 children, including the sisters:

  • Maria (1642–1695), ⚭ 1661 Jakob Johann von Taube (1624–1695), Swedish major general and governor general in Ingermanland
  • Maria (1646–1668), ⚭ 1660 Anders Lilliehöök (1635–1685), Swedish Imperial Councilor and diplomat

Career

Horn studied in Leiden and Oxford , was still chamberlain to Gustav II Adolf and was promoted to chamberlain in 1634 .

He joined the army and was a captain in the Upplands Regiment in 1635 , where he rose to major in 1637 and went to Germany for the Thirty Years' War . He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the " Leslie " regiment in 1638 and to colonel in the " Wittenberg " regiment in 1640. In the same year he was taken prisoner near Plauen . In 1647 he was promoted to major general of the cavalry and in 1652 to lieutenant general .

Horn was 1653 Imperial Council . From 1654 to 1657 he was Governor General of Ingermanland and Kexholm .

Under difficult conditions he had to fend off the Russians in the Russo-Swedish War in 1656 as a general of the Swedish and Finnish cavalry and in 1657 as an imperial military master and commanding general in Finland . He was also governor general of Finland from 1657 to 1658 . In 1658 he became a Lagman in Närke . With his promotion to field marshal in 1663 he also became governor general in Bremen-Verden , which he remained until 1666.

Already in 1651 he was with his cousin Henrik Henriksson Horn (1618-1693) to the Barons of Marienburg in Livonia raised that with Laizen and Marie Stone erbenlos the remaining uncle Gustav Horn was cloned 1625th In the same year the family was introduced to the baron class of the Swedish knighthood (No. 21). Horn was also the heir to the Finnish estates Kanckas , Porkkala , Bergsund and Sonnäs. He was buried in Åbo Cathedral.
